EU and EEA roam-like-at-home covers you in Nice at your domestic rates, and there is nothing on the Riviera that changes it. Check your fair-use allowance if you are staying for weeks. Otherwise buy nothing.

The rest of this is for visitors from outside the EU, and for anyone whose day trips leave the coast.

The coast is one long connected corridor

The standard Riviera circuit — Nice, Cannes, Antibes, the corniche roads — is well covered throughout. Signal in Nice itself is strong, and on the coastal run between the towns we have no gaps to report. Any provider will do here, so buy on price.

City transport wants live data rather than good coverage: the Nice tramway and the city buses run on the Lignes d'Azur app for real-time information, and Google Maps handles the city well.

Monaco is seven kilometres away and a different country

This is the one thing worth reading twice. Monaco sits about seven kilometres along the coast from Nice, close enough that people treat it as a suburb, and it is a sovereign state outside the EU with its own network operator.

The practical consequence is that a plan sold as "France" may or may not include it. Some do, some don't, and a French domestic SIM is not the same product as a travel eSIM in this respect. Check the coverage list at checkout before you rely on your phone working over the border, and treat the trip as a border crossing rather than a tram ride. A regional Europe plan sidesteps the question if Monaco is central to your trip.

We are hedging deliberately. Handset behaviour at that border depends on which network you are actually on, and no eSIM provider we track publishes a confirmed host network in France — so we cannot tell you what your specific plan will do.

Inland: the Gorges du Verdon

The big day trip out of Nice is the Gorges du Verdon, often billed as Europe's Grand Canyon, and it is where the coastal picture stops applying.

There is signal in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, the main village at the western end. Down in the gorge itself it drops significantly. That is not a provider problem you can buy your way out of; it is terrain.

So do the boring thing. Download the offline map area before you descend, save the route and any booking confirmations to the phone, and agree a meeting point with anyone you might get separated from. Any plan works fine in the places where signal exists, and no plan works where it doesn't.

What plans cost

Longer stays should look at the top of the ladder rather than the bottom: 50 GB at $35.50 is 71 cents a gigabyte, far better value per gigabyte than anything smaller, which is the opposite of what most travellers assume.

Buying a SIM in Nice

Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) has Orange and Relay outlets, with peak queues around eight minutes on our data — short by international standards. A typical French airport SIM runs about $15, and France requires a passport or ID document for registration wherever you buy.

Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile all have shops in the city if you would rather have someone set it up. Buy locally if you want a French number for restaurant and hire-car bookings; otherwise an eSIM installed before departure is cheaper and skips the counter.
