Data in Lyon: no coverage story, just a booking one

The honest headline: Lyon is not a special case

On connectivity, Lyon is France. Signal is excellent throughout the Presqu'île — the peninsula between the Rhône and the Saône where most visitors spend their time — as well as Vieux Lyon, the UNESCO-listed old town, and up on Fourvière. We hold no dead zones for the city and no local quirk that should change which plan you buy.

That is a short answer, and it is the true one. If you have read a page telling you Lyon needs a particular network, it was padding.

If your phone contract is from an EU or EEA country, the answer is shorter still: roam-like-at-home covers you here at your domestic rates, so buy nothing. Check your fair-use cap and get on with lunch.

What data is genuinely for in Lyon

The city's real dependency is not maps. It is reservations.

Lyon is France's gastronomic capital and it books out. The bouchons — the traditional local restaurants that are the reason a lot of people come — fill up weeks ahead, and the booking layer runs through TheFork (LaFourchette) and Google. Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, the covered food hall, is a fixed point on most food itineraries and is worth checking opening times for before you walk over.

So the data you need is front-loaded. Research and reservations happen before the trip; on the ground you are mostly confirming, navigating and reading menus. That is a small allowance, not a large one.

The TCL network — metro, tram and funicular — works with the standard French transit apps, and Lyon is also a major TGV hub, roughly two hours from Paris with direct connections to Marseille and across the country. A rail app is worth having live if your itinerary involves connections.

How much to buy

Airalo's prices were read from its own site on 13 August 2026, Saily's from its own on 16 August 2026 and Nomad's from its own on 17 August 2026.

A few days in Lyon alone sits comfortably inside 3 GB. A Paris-and-Lyon circuit, or Lyon as a base for wider rail travel, is better served by 10 GB — and at that size Nomad's verified $14 is the cheapest we hold, two dollars under Airalo's verified $16 and nearly three under Saily's $16.99.

The ladder runs further than most pages admit. France goes up to a verified 50 GB for 30 days at $35, which is 70 cents a gigabyte and the cheapest data in the French set. Nobody needs it for a weekend of bouchons. It is the plan for a month-long stay.

Buying a SIM in Lyon

All four national carriers — Orange France, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free Mobile — have high-street shops in the city, and staff will set the SIM up for you. France requires a passport or ID document to register any prepaid SIM, so bring it.

One caveat about the airport: our retail data covers Charles de Gaulle and Nice, and we hold nothing for Lyon-Saint-Exupéry. We are not going to tell you there is a kiosk in arrivals when we have not checked. If you want data the moment you land, install an eSIM before you fly.

On networks, we cannot help you choose.
