Data on Mallorca: the coast is easy, the mountains are not

One island, two connectivity profiles

Mallorca splits cleanly. The populated coast and Palma are well connected; the Serra de Tramuntana along the north-west is not, in a way that matters because that is exactly where the walking and cycling happen.

If your contract is from an EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home covers you here at domestic rates and you should buy nothing — the divide below still applies to your phone, it just costs you nothing to prepare for. Everyone else needs a plan, and the useful question is which half of the island you are spending your time on.

The coast: nothing to solve

Palma, Playa de Palma, Alcúdia, Cala Millor, Porto Cristo, Magaluf and Port d'Andratx all have solid 4G from Orange, Movistar and Vodafone. For a resort holiday with beach days, restaurant bookings and the occasional drive along the main roads, provider choice is close to irrelevant. Buy the cheapest plan that covers your dates and stop thinking about it.

The Tramuntana: villages fine, roads patchy

The Serra de Tramuntana is a UNESCO World Heritage site — limestone peaks dropping straight into the Mediterranean, medieval stone villages, and some of the best road cycling in Europe, which is why tour operators fly groups in from across the continent.

The pattern is consistent. Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller and Fornalutx have reasonable signal in the village centres. It weakens on the mountain roads between them. The Ma-10 — the Tramuntana highway running from Andratx up to Pollença, and the road most visitors drive at least once — has intermittent signal on the more dramatic cliff sections.

The GR 221, the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, crosses the full length of the range and is largely offline except in the villages. If you are walking it, plan on being out of contact between them.

So the preparation is the same whether you spend $4 or $39 on your data: download the offline map for the specific route before you leave Palma or your resort, save your accommodation details and any booking references to the phone, and tell someone your route.

The network you cannot actually choose

Movistar is the strongest Spanish network in our data for rural and mountain reach, and if you could pick it for the Tramuntana you should.

You cannot pick it through an eSIM. No travel eSIM provider we track publishes a host network in Spain at all. Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly name no carrier here or anywhere else — the Movistar, Orange and Vodafone trio this page used to attribute to Holafly's own listing came from our data rather than from Holafly. Any advice to "check your eSIM runs on Movistar" is advice you have no way of following.

The deliberate route onto Movistar is a physical SIM: Movistar's own stores in Palma, or Digi, the cheapest Spanish carrier we record, which runs on Movistar's network and is sold at El Corte Inglés and Carrefour. Spain requires a passport or ID document to register either.

If you are hiking or cycling the Tramuntana seriously, that is what we would do. If you are on the coast, it is unnecessary effort.

What plans cost

A week in a resort runs comfortably on 3 to 5 GB. Cycling or hiking weeks are lighter on data than people expect — you are offline for large parts of the day by definition — so 5 GB at $9 is usually plenty, and the money is better spent on a local SIM than on a bigger allowance you will not use.

One exception. For a stay of a month or more, Spain's ladder is cheapest at the top: 50 GB at $39 is 78 cents a gigabyte, better value per gigabyte than every smaller plan.

Buying on the island

We hold retail detail for Madrid and Barcelona airports but nothing for Palma, so we are not going to promise you a kiosk in arrivals. What we can say is that a typical Spanish airport SIM costs around $18, roughly double city prices, and that Palma has the usual carrier shops plus the supermarket chains that stock Digi.

The simplest plan for most visitors: install an eSIM before you fly, and add a local SIM in Palma only if the mountains are the point of the trip. Full comparison across every provider is on the Spain hub.
