Holafly in Finland: unlimited data by the day, beaten on every rung

One product, six durations

Holafly does not sell gigabytes in Finland. Every plan is unlimited data, and the only decision is how many days you buy. That makes it the simplest product on the Finnish market and, for most travellers, the wrong one.

Six windows — 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days — are the whole range, in Finland and in every other country Holafly sells.

A correction, and it removes both of this page's recommendations. We previously listed a one-day Finnish plan at $6.90, a 20-day at $46.90 and a 90-day at $99, and told you the 90-day plan was the only thing in our entire Finland dataset priced near a dollar a day, and that the one-day plan was the single answer to a long Helsinki-Vantaa layover. Holafly sells none of those durations. The prices we gave for the durations that do exist were wrong too, and wrong downwards: five days is $20.50 rather than $18.90, and the month is $73.90 rather than $59.90.

The ladder has one quirk worth noticing. Five days costs more per day than three does — $4.10 against $3.97 — because $8.60 buys only two extra days.

The tethering problem

Holafly's Finland plans were listed without hotspot tethering. That is not a setting you can turn on, and it is a good reason to walk away. If you travel with a laptop or an iPad that has no SIM of its own, unlimited data on a phone you cannot share is close to useless — and Finland is a country where a lot of visitors are working remotely from a cabin.

There are no calls or SMS either. Messaging runs over data, which is fine for WhatsApp and the like, but it means no local number for restaurant bookings, taxi apps that insist on SMS verification, or a delivery driver trying to find your door.

Where it loses, which is everywhere

Airalo is the other seller of unlimited Finnish data, and its prices were read from its own site.

Airalo is cheaper at all six lengths, by 40 cents at three days and by $4.90 at thirty. This page previously said that from ten days on Holafly was clearly cheaper — $27.90 against $34, $36.90 against $50.50, $59.90 against $69. Those Holafly figures were not read from Holafly, and the direction of the comparison reverses once the real ones are in.

The loss against capped data is larger. Airalo's verified 50GB for 30 days is $36 — less than half Holafly's unlimited month, and 50GB is more data than most people manage to use in Finland. Drop to a realistic 10GB and it is $15.50 verified, about a fifth of Holafly's price for the same window; Saily's 10GB month is $15.99. Unless you are genuinely uncountable — daily video calls, streaming in the evenings, hotspotting you cannot do here anyway — the arithmetic says buy capped.

The network claim

Holafly's own listing names no carrier at all. The Elisa, DNA and Telia Finland trio this page used to show came from our own data — which was inconsistent about it, one row carrying nothing — and reading Holafly's pages confirmed it publishes no host network for Finland or for any country. The old page also stated flatly that Holafly ran on the widest-coverage carrier in Finland; there is no basis for that, and it has gone.

What is true regardless is that coverage in Finland is strong on the main E-roads and in the tourist towns, and thin in the Lapland wilderness and fell areas such as Saariselkä and Kevo, on remote lake islands, and in some border wilderness. No travel eSIM lets you pick a network to fix that.

The verdict

We cannot make a price case for Holafly in Finland any more. Airalo's unlimited is cheaper at every one of the six lengths, the long-stay plan that justified the old recommendation does not exist, and a 10GB month at $15.50 covers most visitors for a fifth of what Holafly's month costs.

If you hold an EU or EEA plan, buy nothing at all: Finland is covered at your domestic rates. No passport is needed to activate an eSIM, unlike the Finnish prepaid SIMs sold at the airport for about $12, which require ID registration.
