Elisa Finland SIM card: prepaid, eSIM, and what to know before you land
Elisa sells a prepaid SIM in shops and an eSIM online, charged by use with a daily data cap. Its rules for visitors are partly unstated.
An Elisa Finland SIM card is a pay-as-you-use prepaid line, not a tourist bundle. That suits someone staying a few weeks who wants a Finnish number, and suits a weekend visitor less well. We read Elisa's prepaid pages on 8 October 2026. Elisa has no page we found aimed specifically at tourists.
Which Elisa Finland SIM card can a visitor buy?
Elisa has two prepaid products. Elisa Prepaid starts with a 6 EUR balance and comes as a SIM from stores or as an eSIM. Elisa Latausliittymä lets you choose a starting balance from 10 to 100 EUR, with 20 EUR as the default, and can be moved to a postpaid plan later.
Rates on Elisa's page include VAT. Calls and texts are 0.089 EUR each, and data is 0.089 EUR per MB but capped at 0.99 EUR a day. The page also lists higher prices from 1 November 2026 for some items, such as data at 0.099 EUR per MB. Fixed packages are optional: for example, 12 GB for 7 days at 7.99 EUR, or 37 GB for 30 days at 24.99 EUR. Elisa's other page says a 5G connection costs 1.29 EUR a day with a minimum order of 31 days.
Where to buy an Elisa prepaid SIM or eSIM
Physical starter packs are sold at Elisa stores, R-kioski, and S- and K-group stores. The eSIM comes from lataa.elisa.fi: you get an activation link, QR code or manual details in your order email. The page also says that subscriptions must be activated in Finland before they are used abroad. It does not say whether you can order the eSIM from outside Finland, so assume you cannot until Elisa confirms.
Does Elisa prepaid need ID, and who is it registered to?
Elisa's instructions say the subscriptions cannot be registered under your own name or personal identity number. That removes a hurdle for visitors, but it also means numbers cannot be ported to another operator. The page does not mention an ID check at the till.
Elisa Finland SIM card coverage and 5G
Elisa calls its 5G network "Aito 5G", used when available with an automatic fall-back to 4G, and you need a 5G phone. We did not find coverage percentages on the pages we read. Our Finland network note names Elisa the largest and best for rural and Lapland areas; Elisa's pages do not say that, so it is an unverified lead. Check Elisa's coverage map at elisa.fi/kuuluvuus if you are heading north.
Elisa or a travel eSIM?
A new Elisa subscription is valid for 3 months from first use, and every recharge extends validity by 12 months. That is generous, but you pay a starter fee and for use. A travel eSIM is often simpler for under a week and can be installed before takeoff. See our Finland comparison and the cheapest eSIM page. If you prefer a flat daily rate, DNA charges 0.99 EUR a day on 4G in its Rajaton plan, and Telia Finland sells an eSIM online from 9.90 EUR. The Finland hub has the full picture.
What Elisa's pages do not say
They do not give a starter-pack price for the physical SIM beyond the 6 EUR balance, do not say whether visitors can buy the eSIM from abroad, and do not give coverage numbers. Check Elisa's site for the current price list.
Common questions
Is an Elisa Finland SIM card good for tourists?
It suits stays of a few weeks, when a Finnish number and pay-as-you-use rates make sense. Elisa has no tourist bundle that we found. For a short visit, a travel eSIM installed before landing is usually simpler.
How much does an Elisa prepaid SIM cost?
Elisa's page says the Elisa Prepaid starter pack includes 6 EUR of balance, and Latausliittymä lets you pick a balance of 10 to 100 EUR. Data is capped at 0.99 EUR a day. Some prices change from 1 November 2026, so check Elisa's site.
Does Elisa have an eSIM for visitors?
Yes, Elisa sells a prepaid eSIM at lataa.elisa.fi, with activation by link, QR code or manual entry. The page says subscriptions must be activated in Finland. It does not say whether you can order from abroad, so check before relying on it.
Do I need to register an Elisa prepaid SIM with my passport?
Elisa's instructions say prepaid subscriptions cannot be registered in your own name or personal identity number. The page mentions no ID check at purchase, but it also does not rule one out in a shop.
Does Elisa Finland have 5G?
Elisa says its 5G network is used when available, falling back to 4G, and that you need a compatible phone. A 5G connection is 1.29 EUR a day with a 31-day minimum order. It publishes coverage on its map rather than on the prepaid page.
