Telia Finland SIM card: the prepaid SIM, the eSIM and the activation rule
Telia sells a mailed prepaid SIM and an online-only eSIM. Its eSIM support page says activation must happen in Finland, which matters for visitors.
A Telia Finland SIM card works for visitors if you plan ahead: Telia sells a prepaid SIM that it mails, and a prepaid eSIM online. The catch is on its support page, which says the eSIM order and activation must be done in Finland. We read Telia's pages on 8 October 2026.
Which Telia Finland SIM card can a visitor buy?
Telia Prepaid physical SIM. Telia lists it at 4.90 EUR, with no activation fee, including a 7 EUR starter balance and a 5 EUR bonus on the first top-up. It stays active for 3 months from activation, or 12 months after your latest top-up. Usage rates: data 0.01 EUR per MB, calls and messages 0.067 EUR each. Telia says the SIM is posted and arrives in one to two business days, and it is also sold at Telia Kauppa stores, R-kioski, Prisma, ABC, Alepa, Sale and K-group stores.
Data packages on the same page include 31-day Unlimited 4G surf at 19.90 EUR (up to 100 Mbit/s), and 31-day Unlimited 5G surf at 29.90 EUR (up to 300 Mbit/s). The base SIM runs on 4G at up to 100 Mbit/s; 5G needs a 5G package.
Telia Prepaid eSIM. Listed "from 9.90 EUR" on Telia's English page, sold online only, not in stores. You enter your email, pay, and get a QR code by email. The page says there is a 5 EUR bonus with the first top-up, and that it works at domestic rates in EU/EEA countries.
Can a tourist activate the Telia eSIM?
Telia's Finnish support page says activation must be done in Finland, and you have 3 months from purchase to do it. The English sales page does not repeat this. So a visitor can plausibly buy ahead, but must be in Finland to switch it on. Keep the order email: the PIN and PUK codes are in it and Telia says customer service cannot provide them.
Does a Telia prepaid SIM need ID?
Neither Telia page we read mentions an ID or passport requirement. We cannot say whether a shop asks for one.
Telia Finland SIM card coverage and 5G
Telia's pages give speeds for the SIM and its packages, but we found no coverage percentage or map statement on the pages we read. Our Finland network note calls Telia a good second choice; that is not Telia's own claim.
Telia or a travel eSIM?
For one week with data only, a travel eSIM that you can install at home is usually simpler than a Telia line that needs activation in Finland. Telia wins if you want a Finnish number, calls, and a SIM that stays valid for a year with top-ups. See our Finland comparison and the cheapest eSIM page. For other local options, DNA sells a prepaid eSIM at prepaidesim.dna.fi, and Elisa sells one at lataa.elisa.fi. The Finland hub has the wider guide.
What Telia's pages do not say
The English eSIM page does not state what the 9.90 EUR includes, its validity, or its 4G and 5G behaviour. It does not say whether a foreign card is accepted. We have not tested the service.
