WE Egypt SIM card: Telecom Egypt prepaid and eSIM for visitors

WE sells an eSIM for EGP 330, but its eSIM page asks for an Egyptian national ID in the app flow and only activates inside Egypt.

Is a WE Egypt SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

Probably not as a first pick. WE is the mobile brand of Telecom Egypt, and a WE Egypt SIM card is sold to anyone in a branch, but we found no tourist plan on its site and its eSIM process leans on Egyptian paperwork. Vodafone and Orange both give visitors a clearer route.

How much is a WE eSIM or prepaid line?

WE's eSIM page (read 8 October 2026) gives EGP 330 for a new eSIM line and EGP 270 for a SIM swap, with taxes included. Individuals can get one for a new line or a swap; corporate customers can get one for a swap only. The phone must be compatible, which you can check in its SIM manager settings or by calling 111.

How does the WE eSIM get activated?

Two routes. In the My WE app you tap "Switch to eSIM" and pay online, but the flow asks for photos of a national ID and your maternal grandfather's name in Arabic, which a tourist will not have. Alternatively, buy at a WE branch, pay and receive a QR code.

The conditions are strict. The QR code works once and must be used within five days of signing up. Profiles can be downloaded and activated only inside Egypt, so you cannot set this up from home. After the download you call 111 for data validation and line activation. The page does not mention passports or foreigners, which is why we cannot call this a tourist product.

Do you need a passport for a WE SIM card?

For a regular prepaid line sold in a store, a search extract of Telecom Egypt's help content listed a valid passport as the document for foreigners. That text may be old, as it also gave a different line price from the eSIM page, so confirm in a branch.

WE Egypt coverage and 5G

Neither page we read makes a coverage or 5G claim. We found no coverage statement from WE at all, and would not guess.

WE or a travel eSIM?

WE's own eSIM can only be activated after you arrive and depends on a branch visit, so for most visitors a travel eSIM that you install at home is simpler. No travel eSIM provider except eSIMCard publishes its host network. Compare them on our Egypt SIM card page and the cheapest eSIM list. If you prefer a local SIM, read Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and e& Egypt first, and see the Egypt hub.
