Buying a SIM card in Egypt: airports, cities and the eSIM route

What you need before you buy

Your passport. Egypt requires ID registration for prepaid SIM cards, and there is no way around it at a counter. Budget around $8 for a tourist data package at airport pricing.

The four networks are Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt and WE. Vodafone has the strongest nationwide coverage, including Luxor, Aswan, Sinai and the Red Sea resorts, and it is the one to ask for if you are heading beyond Cairo. Orange is a close competitor with its own tourist bundles.

At the airport

Twenty minutes is a real cost after a long flight and an immigration queue, particularly if you are travelling with family or have a driver waiting. It is the single strongest argument for arriving with data already on your phone.

Both airports have staffed carrier desks rather than kiosks, which has an upside: someone registers the SIM properly, activates it, and confirms the bundle is live before you walk away. If you are going to buy local, buying at the counter is better than buying from a shop that will not test it.

In the cities

Vodafone and Orange SIMs are sold at Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada as well as Cairo, and through carrier stores nationwide. Tourist packages with data are the standard product for visitors — you are not expected to build a plan from scratch.

The passport requirement applies in city stores exactly as it does at the airport. Carry it with you if buying a SIM is on the day's list.

Wifi will not carry you everywhere

Egyptian wifi is good in the places built for visitors and thin everywhere else. Hotels, cruise ships and tourist restaurants are generally reliable. Luxor and Aswan hotels have reasonable connections. But wifi at monuments and historical sites is minimal, which is precisely where people want to look things up, share a photo or find their group.

So wifi works as a bridge — enough to get you from landing to sorting out a SIM later — but it is not a substitute for mobile data if your trip is built around sites rather than hotels.

One thing Egypt gets right

There are no restrictions on WhatsApp, FaceTime or other VoIP apps in Egypt. Voice and video calls over data work normally. This is worth stating plainly because several countries in the region do block them, and travellers arrive expecting the worst. You can call home over WhatsApp on any connection here.

The eSIM alternative

Installed before you fly, an eSIM is active when you land: no counter, no passport scan, no 20-minute wait.

Be clear-eyed about the trade. Egyptian eSIM data is expensive — $2.42 to $5.50 per GB depending on tier — so for a two-week trip with heavy use, the local $8 tourist SIM may well work out better, and it gives you an Egyptian number that travel eSIMs do not. What the eSIM buys you is the arrival: no queue, no registration, working from the moment the aircraft doors open.
