Data in Edinburgh: fine all year, difficult for three weeks in August

The August problem

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival in the world. In August it brings more than 250,000 visitors a day into a city centre that was laid out in the Middle Ages, with thousands of them standing outdoors watching street performers on the Royal Mile and in the Grassmarket. Network congestion along those two streets is significant, and it lasts for most of the month.

Nothing you buy fixes that. Congestion is a capacity problem at the cell site, not a coverage problem, so a bigger data plan and a different provider both land you in the same queue. What actually works is preparation: download the Fringe programme app before you arrive, book shows in advance rather than in the street, and screenshot your tickets so you are not waiting on a page load outside a venue with 200 other people doing the same thing.

August is also the Edinburgh International Festival. Hogmanay on 31 December brings a massive street party with heavy congestion around midnight. The Military Tattoo runs at the Castle in summer. Outside those dates, Edinburgh is an easy city to be connected in.

Signal in the city

Coverage is excellent throughout Edinburgh. Average 4G speed is 45 Mbps, 5G around 130 Mbps — comfortably above what you need for anything on a phone. EE is the strongest network here, consistent with its national position of 99.8% 4G population coverage and 77.4% 5G availability.

Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile are well covered, and both the Old Town and the New Town have full 4G and 5G. The weak spots are small and specific: the stone interior rooms of the Castle can drop out, and the summit of Arthur's Seat has patches where you lose signal on the rock. Neither is a reason to change what you buy.

Driving north

This is the real coverage question for Edinburgh visitors, and it has nothing to do with the city. Signal weakens as you head north toward the Highlands, and it keeps weakening. EE maintains the best coverage on those roads, which makes an EE-based eSIM the right default if the Highlands are on your itinerary. The UK's genuine coverage gaps are up there — the Outer Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland especially.

If you are renting a car in Edinburgh and driving to Skye, download offline maps for the route before you leave the city. That single habit removes almost all of the risk.

Buying here

UK SIMs need no ID whatsoever. You can buy one and be connected in the time it takes to pay. At Edinburgh Airport, WHSmith and Boots in arrivals both sell them. In town, Tesco and Sainsbury's stock them, and supermarkets tend to be cheaper than the airport — a UK SIM at an airport runs around $10, while giffgaff and Smarty PAYG bundles go for roughly £5–10 for 5–10GB.

For a stay of two weeks or more, that local PAYG route is the cheapest data in Britain. For a shorter trip, an eSIM you install before you fly saves you the errand.
