Buying a SIM card at Edinburgh Airport

One shop, and it is quick

Edinburgh is smaller and simpler than London's airports, and the SIM situation matches. Our record names one seller: WHSmith in the main arrivals area, stocking standard UK prepaid SIM kits at £10 to £20.

The queue is five minutes or less, among the shortest of any airport we cover. UK prepaid SIMs need no ID, so there is no form and no passport scan — you are only waiting for the till. Against Heathrow's 8 to 10 minutes and Gatwick's 6 to 8, Edinburgh wins on speed by simply having fewer people wanting the same thing.

What we do not hold is opening hours, for WHSmith or for anything else at the airport. If you are landing late, that is a gap you should assume the worst about rather than plan around.

The Highlands question, and the claim we had wrong

This is the part that makes Edinburgh different from the other UK airports. A trip that stays in the city has no interesting network question — Edinburgh's coverage is urban coverage, and any UK network will do. A trip that runs into the Highlands, the islands or anywhere rural does have one, because that is where UK networks genuinely diverge.

An earlier version of this page told readers to pre-install an Airalo eSIM on the grounds that it runs on EE in the UK. That was wrong, and we are not going to soften it. Airalo publishes no host network for the United Kingdom, and it publishes none for any other country either; what looks like a network on its listings is its own product name — in Britain, Uki Mobile. Saily, Nomad, eSIM Go and eSIMCard say nothing about a UK host network either. Holafly names nothing either: the Three UK and Virgin Media O2 pairing this page used to place on its own site, and only against its shorter plans, came from our own data rather than from Holafly.

So the advice that follows from it also has to change. If a specific network matters to you for rural Scotland, an eSIM cannot deliver it, because no seller will tell you what you are buying. A physical SIM can, because the network is printed on the packet. Our record says WHSmith at Edinburgh stocks a range of carriers, so ask at the counter which network a kit uses, or read the box before you pay. That is not a satisfying answer, but it is the accurate one, and it is the reverse of what this page used to say.

What the shelf costs against what a phone costs

The kits at Edinburgh run £10 to £20, cheaper than Heathrow's £15 to £30. Our record does not say what data any of them include.

The cheapest gigabyte in the UK is at the top of that ladder, not the bottom: $0.78 on the 50 GB plan. Airalo also sells a dearer Uki Mobile+ tier at every size, and does not state what the premium buys, so we make no claim for it.

The tram, and the roaming point

Edinburgh's tram runs from the airport terminal to St Andrew Square in the city centre in about 30 minutes, £7.50 single. It is a single direct line and transit apps handle it well, so this is not a journey that punishes you for landing without data.

If you are arriving from the EU, check your own tariff before you assume you are covered. Britain is outside the EU, so roam-like-at-home does not extend here, and whether your bundle includes the UK now depends on what your home operator decided after Brexit. Some kept it in, some did not. If yours did, you should buy nothing at all — at the airport or online.
