Buying a SIM card at Heathrow Airport

Heathrow has the broadest SIM retail of any UK airport. Our record of it is not even across the five terminals, so here is what we hold and where the gaps are.

Terminal 2 has a Sim Local kiosk, described in our record as the main one, plus WHSmith. Terminal 3 has a Sim Local kiosk and WHSmith. Terminal 5, where British Airways lands, has a Sim Local kiosk along with WHSmith and Boots; if you are arriving on BA, the WHSmith near the arrivals exit is the shortest walk to a SIM. WHSmith trades in all five terminals.

For Terminal 4 we hold nothing beyond that. There will be a WHSmith. We have no kiosk, counter or hours detail specific to T4, and would rather say so than fill the gap in.

One set of hours for the whole airport

The only opening times we hold are a blanket range: generally 5:30am to 11pm, sometimes later. That is not a per-shop figure and not a per-terminal one, and Heathrow runs long-haul arrivals well outside it. If you land at 5am off a US east coast redeye, or on a delayed evening flight that pushes past midnight, assume the counters are shut rather than plan around a range this vague.

When the shops are open the queue is 8 to 10 minutes on our record, which is short by international standards. UK prepaid SIMs need no ID, so nothing slows the transaction at the till: no registration form, no passport scan, no address to give. That is a real difference from Brussels or Varna, where the paperwork is the queue.

What the counter costs, and what the phone costs

Our Heathrow record puts a tourist SIM package at £15 to £30. Our UK country record separately puts a typical airport SIM at about $10. We cannot reconcile the two and will not pretend one is authoritative. Neither tells you the data allowance, which is the part that decides whether it was good value.

Here is what the eSIMs cost, in US dollars, read from the providers' own UK checkouts on 13 August 2026.

The bottom row is the point. The cheapest verified gigabyte in the UK sits at the top of the ladder, not the bottom — 50 GB for 30 days at $39 is $0.78 a gigabyte, five times better value than the 1 GB starter and cheaper per gigabyte than anything else we hold for this country. That is the number to hold a Heathrow price tag against.

Airalo sells the UK under two named tiers, Uki Mobile and Uki Mobile+. The plus costs more at every size — 50 GB for 30 days is $54 rather than $39 — and Airalo does not publish what the extra buys, so we cannot tell you whether it is worth it.

For unlimited rather than a bucket, Airalo's Uki Mobile is verified at $27.00 for 7 days and $48.00 for 15. Holafly lists $27.30 and $49.90 for the same two durations, indicative rather than read from a checkout.

Only one provider says anything about the network

Five of the six eSIM sellers in our UK data publish nothing at all about which network their plans roam onto. Airalo, Saily, Nomad, eSIM Go and eSIMCard are all silent on it.

Holafly used to look like a partial exception here: our record pointed to Three UK and Virgin Media O2 on its shorter plans and said nothing on the 20, 30, 60 and 90 day ones. That patchiness was the clue. Reading Holafly's own site showed it names no operator for the UK or for any country, so the pairing came from our data rather than the seller, and it has gone — along with the earlier copy that attached a different network to those plans.

The consequence matters more than the correction. If you want one UK network specifically — usually because you are heading somewhere rural, where coverage genuinely diverges — an eSIM cannot reliably give it to you, because nobody will tell you what you are buying. A physical SIM can, because the packaging names the network. That is the one solid argument for joining the queue.

The UK is outside the EU, and it shows up on your bill

Brussels, Prague and Ljubljana are places an EU visitor can land and buy nothing at all, because roam-like-at-home covers them. London is not one of them. The UK left the EU, so an EU or EEA bundle does not automatically extend here — some home operators kept Britain in the allowance after Brexit, some reinstated charges. Check your own tariff before you fly; it costs nothing and may save you the entire purchase.

What we would actually do

Free Heathrow wi-fi runs throughout the airport. It needs a login but has no time limit, and it is quick enough to install an eSIM while you wait for a bag.

The Elizabeth line runs from Heathrow Central beneath Terminals 2 and 3: 21 minutes to Paddington, 33 to Tottenham Court Road, a flat fare of around £13.50 with contactless or Oyster.

Buy at Heathrow if you land inside opening hours, want a physical SIM, and care which network you end up on. Otherwise install before you fly, or on the free wi-fi at the carousel, and keep the difference. The full UK plan ladder is on our United Kingdom hub.
