SIM cards at Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI): a 20-minute queue you can skip

Twenty minutes at peak, on an island where nearly everyone is covered already

Our queue record for PMI is 20 minutes at peak and 5 minutes off-peak — the longest peak wait we hold for a Spanish airport, and our notes describe SIM queues here as very long in July and August specifically. That is the arrival hall in the middle of the season, when Palma is handling holiday traffic on a scale few European airports match.

The reason to lead with the queue is that for most people it buys nothing. Mallorca's inbound traffic is overwhelmingly European, and an EU or EEA mobile contract already works in Spain under roam-like-at-home: your normal allowance, no surcharge, live before you have collected a bag. Check your tariff's fair-use data cap before you fly and that is the whole task done.

UK contracts need one extra look. EU roaming stopped being a legal right for British operators after Brexit, and several of them reintroduced daily fees, so whether you need anything at all depends on your specific tariff rather than on the country you are visiting.

What we actually hold on PMI

Orange and Vodafone kiosks in arrivals. A passport is required for SIM registration, which matches our Spain-wide record that passport or ID is needed to register any prepaid line.

That is all of it. We hold nothing on which part of the terminal the kiosks stand in, nothing on opening hours, and nothing on whether they are staffed for the early-morning and late-night charter waves that make up a lot of PMI's schedule. We are not going to fill those gaps with plausible-sounding guesses. If your flight lands outside normal retail hours, plan as though there will be no counter.

Free WiFi runs throughout the terminal, which is enough to confirm a car hire booking or message a transfer driver before you decide anything.

Sizing a Mallorca trip properly

A typical airport SIM in Spain costs around $18 on our record. Most Mallorca trips run a week to a fortnight, so the interesting comparison is not the biggest plan but the middle of the ladder. These prices were read from the providers' own Spanish checkouts on 13 August 2026:

Ten gigabytes over a fortnight — enough for maps, restaurant bookings, boat timetables and a reasonable amount of scrolling by a pool — costs $13.50, well under the counter price for a starter pack you then have to top up. Spain's ladder does run to 50 GB for 30 days at $39, which is the cheapest gigabyte in the country at $0.78, but a one-week holidaymaker has no use for it. Buy for the trip you are taking.

Networks: there is nothing to choose on

If you want to pick an eSIM by which Spanish carrier carries it, our data cannot support that decision. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish no host network for Spain, eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could, and we hold no read of eSIMCard's Spanish listing. Holafly's listing points to nothing. This page used to give it Orange, Movistar and Vodafone, which came from our own data; Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. Its Spanish prices are now checked: $11.90 for three days up to $64.50 for thirty. Coverage on the island's mountain roads and quieter northern coves is exactly the sort of thing a host-network claim would matter for, which is why we will not make one.

What we would do

EU or EEA contract: buy nothing, walk out, drive away.

Anyone else: install an eSIM before departure. At PMI that is worth slightly more than at most airports, because the arrival routine here is usually a car hire desk followed immediately by a drive to somewhere you have never been. Having maps working while you are still in the car park is the actual benefit — the $10 or so you save on the counter price is a bonus.

If you have landed with nothing in August, the kiosk is a twenty-minute queue and roughly double the money. That is a bad deal, not a disaster.
