Buying a SIM at Málaga Airport (AGP), and why most arrivals shouldn't

Most people landing at AGP should buy nothing at all

Málaga is the Costa del Sol's main gateway, and the overwhelming share of its traffic is European. If your mobile contract comes from an EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home applies from the moment the aircraft doors open: your normal allowance works in Spain at no extra cost. No kiosk, no queue, no passport scan at a counter. The only thing worth checking before you fly is your plan's fair-use data cap, which on some tariffs is tighter than a fortnight by the sea will comfortably need.

UK contracts are the exception to look at properly. Since Brexit, EU roaming is each operator's commercial choice rather than a legal right, and several British networks brought daily charges back. One check of your own tariff decides whether the rest of this page is relevant to you.

What is actually on sale at Málaga Airport

Our record for AGP lists Orange and Vodafone kiosks in arrivals. That is the entirety of what we hold, and it is worth being straight about the gaps.

We hold no terminal-level detail. Málaga runs more than one terminal, and nothing in our data says which one the kiosks sit in, whether more than one is staffed, or where they stand in relation to baggage reclaim and the exit. We also hold no opening hours, so we cannot tell you a counter will be staffed for a late-evening or dawn arrival. Treat the kiosk as something you may find rather than something you can plan around.

Free WiFi is available throughout the terminals — enough to load a booking or message a driver while you work out what you want to do.

Queues, and why July and August are different

Our queue data for AGP is 15 minutes at peak and 5 minutes off-peak. The peak figure is on the long side for a European airport, and our notes separately flag July and August as the months when Málaga's queues run long. We do not hold a summer-specific number, so read the 15 minutes as a floor for high season rather than a ceiling.

A passport is required for SIM registration here, which matches our country-level record for Spain: passport or ID is needed to register a prepaid line. You will be holding your passport anyway, but it means the transaction is a form-filling exercise, not a thirty-second purchase — which is where the queue time actually comes from.

What the counter costs against buying before you fly

Spain's ladder runs all the way to 50 GB for 30 days at $39, and that top rung is the cheapest gigabyte in the country at $0.78. If you are here for a month with a rental car and a family streaming in the evenings, the largest plan is not the extravagant option — it is the efficient one. At the other end, a single gigabyte for a week costs less than a quarter of the counter price and is live before you land.

What we cannot tell you about networks

If you were hoping to pick an eSIM by which Spanish carrier it uses, we cannot help, and neither can most of the market. Airalo, Saily and Nomad do not publish a host network for Spain at all, eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could, and we hold no read of eSIMCard's Spanish listing. Holafly's listing points to nothing. This page used to give it Orange, Movistar and Vodafone, which came from our own data; Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. Its Spanish prices, by contrast, are now checked: $11.90 for three days up to $64.50 for thirty.

What we would do

EU or EEA contract: nothing. Walk out and use your own allowance.

Everything else: install an eSIM before departure and land connected, which matters more at Málaga than at most airports because so many arrivals go straight to a rental car desk and then onto the A-7. If you have already landed without one and need data in your hand, the kiosk will cost you fifteen minutes in August and roughly double the money — irritating rather than ruinous.
