Buying a SIM card in Singapore

The short answer

At Changi, in arrivals, in any terminal. Singtel and StarHub both sell there, M1 is available too, tourist SIMs start at SGD15 — about $11 — and no ID is required. The queue is around five minutes at peak, which is as painless as airport SIM buying gets anywhere.

The shorter answer is that you may not need to buy anything physical at all. A travel eSIM for Singapore starts at $3.99, installs before you leave home and comes up when you land.

Changi is one of the easy ones

Three things make Changi unusual, and all three are worth stating because they are not true of most airports.

Every terminal has SIM sales, so you do not need to work out which side of the airport you are landing on. No identification is required for tourist prepaid, so there is no registration form, no passport photocopying and no waiting for activation. And the peak queue is five minutes, against ten or more at plenty of European airports.

There is also no airport premium worth avoiding. Singtel's tourist SIM starts at SGD15 at Changi, and our figure for a typical Singaporean airport or retail SIM is about $12 — the same money you would spend in town. Compare that with Budapest, where the single airport counter charges €50–60 for a tourist SIM. Changi is not doing that.

Away from the airport

If you land without one, prepaid SIMs are sold at 7-Eleven and other convenience stores across the island, which in a city this dense means you are rarely far from one. Singtel, StarHub and M1 are the three carriers whose products you will encounter; TPG is the fourth network and positions itself as the budget option.

We do not hold verified opening hours or store locations for city-centre carrier shops, so we are not going to publish a list of addresses we cannot stand behind. In practice the convenience-store route makes those largely unnecessary.

What it costs, both ways

The eSIM is cheaper at every comparable size, but the gap is $2 to $8, not the tenfold difference you see in countries with captive airport retail. So this is a preference decision rather than a value one. Buy the physical SIM if you want a local number or your phone cannot take an eSIM — the compatibility list answers that in seconds, and it needs answering before you fly, not after. Buy the eSIM if you would rather walk straight out of the terminal.

You can wait, if you want to

Singapore has the best public wi-fi of any country we cover. Wireless@SGx is free and available in more than 5,000 locations, including MRT stations, shopping malls, libraries and tourist attractions. That is enough coverage to get from Changi to your hotel, look up dinner and message home without any mobile data at all.

It also changes what you should buy. If a large share of your connected time will run over free wi-fi, a small plan goes further than the same plan would in a city where you are on cellular all day. That is the argument against unlimited data here, and it is a good one.
