Cancún: straightforward coverage, until the Holbox ferry

The tourist corridor is well covered

The Hotel Zone and the Riviera Maya strip running south through Playa del Carmen to Tulum are comfortably covered. So are the day trips: Chichén Itzá, two and a half hours west, the Tulum ruins and Cobá all have signal in the main visitor areas.

For most Cancún holidays that is the end of the story. Any plan works, the choice is price, and the interesting decision is whether to buy an eSIM at all when a Mexican prepaid SIM needs no ID and costs about $8 at the airport.

Holbox is the exception, and it catches people out

Isla Holbox is one of the most photographed places on the Yucatán Peninsula — flamingos, whale sharks in season, bioluminescence at night, no cars on the island. For most visitors it also has no mobile signal.

Not weak signal. Absent. Hotels and restaurants have some WiFi, so it is not a total blackout, but you should plan on arriving with no working data and finding a connection only where somebody chooses to provide one.

The ferry from Chiquilá on the mainland takes 25 minutes, and everything you need has to be on your phone before you board:

• Your accommodation address and check-in instructions
• An offline map of the island
• Boat tour bookings, as screenshots rather than links
• Emergency contacts

No eSIM fixes this and no carrier fixes it either. It is a coverage fact about the island, not a purchase decision.

Tulum is its own case

Tulum town has ordinary, decent coverage. The beachfront hotel strip is variable, partly by design — several eco-lodges treat minimal WiFi and signal as part of what they are selling. What data costs here

From our Mexico plan data — Airalo checked on its own site on 13 August 2026, Saily on 16 August 2026:

A week in the Hotel Zone with day trips is a few gigabytes at most, so the 3 GB tier is the usual answer: Nomad's verified $7 buys the month outright, Airalo's $8.50 covers a week, and Saily's $9.99 is the dearest way to the same allowance. The ladder does not stop in the middle: the verified 50 GB month at $45 works out at $0.90 a gigabyte, the lowest rate we hold for Mexico, which matters if you are here for a month or splitting a hotspot across a family.

Airalo sells two Mexico lines, Chido and Chido Plus, and lists every allowance under both names — so the same 3 GB for 7 days is $8.50 as Chido and $12.50 as Chido Plus, and the same 50 GB month is $45 or $54. The rows above are Chido. What the Plus tier buys is not stated by Airalo, so take Chido unless the checkout tells you on the day what the extra money is for.

The local SIM is a real competitor here

Mexico requires no ID to register a prepaid SIM — you buy it and it works. Our figure for an airport SIM is around $8, which is cheaper than most of the eSIM table and lets you pick a network, which no eSIM in our data does.

The case for an eSIM in Cancún is narrower than usual, and it comes down to arrivals: you land connected, skip the counter, and can order a car or confirm a transfer before you have left the terminal. None of Saily, Airalo, Nomad or Holafly publishes which Mexican network carries you, and the carriers this page once read off Holafly's own listing came from our data rather than from Holafly. eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could publish one, and eSIMCard does publish host carriers on its country pages, confirmed on its Japanese one, but we have not read its page for this country and hold no network for it here. Mexico's networks are Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar.
