Mexico City: the phone you want working before you land

In CDMX, data is a transport decision

Almost every safety guide to Mexico City lands on the same advice: use Uber or DiDi rather than a street taxi, especially for airport arrivals and late-night journeys. The reason is not the car. It is that the app shows you a named driver, a tracked route and a fixed fare before you get in, and leaves a record afterwards.

All of that runs on data. That makes Mexico City the one place in the country where we would push you towards arriving already connected rather than sorting a SIM out later — not because the coverage is difficult, but because the moment you most want a working ride app is the moment you walk out of baggage reclaim.

Coverage is excellent, and not the problem

The Centro Histórico, Roma Norte, Condesa, Polanco, Coyoacán and Xochimilco all have strong signal. 5G is available in Polanco, Santa Fe and the main commercial corridors, with 4G running around 35–50 Mbps across the rest of the city — comfortably enough for ride apps, maps and video calls.

The Metro is extensive and easy to navigate with the Metro CDMX app alongside Google Maps. Nothing about this city's network argues for one provider over another, so buy on price.

The airport, specifically

Benito Juárez (MEX) has authorised fixed-rate taxi stands inside the terminal, signed TAXI AUTORIZADO or SITIO. Those are the safe counter option, and they do not need your phone. It is the street taxis outside the doors that safety guidance warns about.

If you would rather use Uber, order it from inside the terminal once you have your luggage and walk out to the designated rideshare pickup zone. That sequence needs data at the point where a newly landed traveller is least likely to have any — hence the argument for an eSIM installed before you fly, or for buying a local SIM at the airport before you go looking for a car.

What it costs

A city break spent on ride apps, maps and messaging is a small-data trip; 3 GB covers a week without thought. Ride-hailing itself is light. What pushes people higher is video calls home and streaming in the evening.

If you are staying a month — and CDMX collects long-stay visitors — look at the top of the ladder rather than the middle. The verified 50 GB month at $45 works out at $0.90 a gigabyte, the cheapest rate we hold anywhere in the Mexican data, and less than half the per-gigabyte cost of the 10 GB tiers above it.

Local SIM or eSIM

Mexico asks for no ID to register a prepaid SIM, and our figure for an airport SIM is around $8. On price alone, the local SIM wins here and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The three networks are Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar, and buying locally is the only way to choose between them: no eSIM in our data lets you pick. Saily, Airalo, Nomad and Holafly do not publish a host network for Mexico at all; the Mexican carriers once shown against Holafly's rows came from our own data rather than from Holafly. eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could publish one, and eSIMCard does publish host carriers on its country pages, confirmed on its Japanese one, but we have not read its page for this country and hold no network for it here.

What the eSIM buys you in this city is the first thirty minutes after landing. Given how much of Mexico City's practical safety advice depends on a working phone, that is worth more here than it is in Cancún.
