Buying a SIM card at a Mexican airport

Mexico is one of the easier airports to buy in

Most countries make arrival SIMs a chore: a passport scan, a registration form, a counter clerk typing your details into a government portal. Mexico does not. Prepaid SIMs are sold without ID — instant purchase, no document — and the typical airport price is about $8.

Queues are short by international standards too. At Mexico City (Benito Juárez) the counter runs about 12 minutes at peak and 4 minutes off-peak. Cancún is a little faster: roughly 10 minutes at peak, 4 off-peak.

So the usual advice — never buy at the airport, wait until town — is weaker here than almost anywhere. An $8 SIM bought in four minutes without producing a passport is a reasonable deal.

One honest limit: we hold the price, but not what allowance $8 buys. Data included varies by carrier and by promotion, and we have not verified any of it. Treat $8 as the entry price, not as a like-for-like against a data plan.

What is at each airport

Mexico's three national carriers are Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar. Only the first two appear at these arrival counters in our records, and only Telcel at Cancún.

We do not hold terminal numbers or opening hours for either airport, so we are not going to guess at them. Mexico City in particular is a large, busy building and the counter you find will depend on which terminal you land in. If a specific location matters to your plans, that is a question for the airport rather than for us.

The gap the counter cannot close

Here is the argument against buying on arrival, and it is not about money.

The minutes that matter are the ones between clearing customs and getting into a vehicle. Mexico City airport is chaotic on arrival. Cancún is notorious for aggressive taxi touts working the exit from arrivals. In both places, the sensible move is to have a ride booked in an app before you walk out — which means having data before you reach the counter, not after.

A SIM bought inside the terminal solves the problem ten minutes too late, and only if the queue behaves. An eSIM installed at home is live the moment the aircraft's doors open and you take the phone off flight mode. That is the real case for arranging this before you fly: not the $4 saved, but the walk through arrivals with a car already assigned.

What an eSIM costs instead

Airalo sells two Mexico lines, Chido and Chido Plus, and lists the same allowances under both. The Airalo rows above are Chido, the cheaper of the two. The Plus versions of those four are $5.50, $18.50, $42.50 and $54, all verified on the same date. What the Plus tier buys is not stated by Airalo, so we cannot tell you whether the premium is worth paying — only that nothing we hold justifies it.

Saily's entry price used to appear here as $3.99 and unverified. Read from Saily's own site on 16 August 2026 it is $4.99, so Airalo's Chido is now the cheapest way onto a Mexican network before you land. Saily's plan does run seven days against Chido's three, which is the reason to pay the extra dollar.

The entry price still undercuts the airport counter — $4.00 or $4.99 against about $8 — though for a much smaller and clearly stated amount of data.

Worth noting where the good value actually sits: it is at the top of the ladder, not the bottom. Airalo's verified Chido 50 GB at $45 works out at $0.90 a gigabyte, less than a quarter of what the 1 GB starter costs per unit. If you are in Mexico for a month and use your phone normally, the big plan is the cheap one.

On networks, be careful what you read anywhere else. Nobody lists Mexican host carriers. This page used to name Holafly for Telcel and Movistar; that came from our own data, and Holafly publishes no host carrier for any country — we read its prices for 28 of them off esim.holafly.com on 18 August 2026 and not one names an operator. An earlier version of this page also credited Nomad with Telcel; Nomad publishes no host network in any country, and that attribution was never Nomad's. Airalo does not publish a host network for Mexico at all; "Chido" and "Chido Plus" are its own product names at checkout, not carriers. Nobody should choose a plan here on the basis of which network it supposedly uses, because for most of these plans nobody outside the provider knows.

What we would do

Install an eSIM before the flight, for the arrivals-hall reason rather than the price. If you land without one, the Mexican counter is genuinely fine — cheap, quick, no paperwork — and there is no reason to feel you have been fleeced.
