Buying a SIM card at Cancún International (CUN)

CUN has Telcel kiosks in every terminal, T1 through T4. That is unusual — most airports concentrate SIM retail in one international hall and leave the rest of the building without.

It matters at Cancún because the terminal you land in is not up to you. International flights use mostly T2 and T3, and T4 takes some premium carriers. Whichever of them your aircraft parks at, there is a Telcel counter.

The queue runs 8 to 10 minutes as a rule. We hold no opening hours for the kiosks, which is the one gap worth planning around if you land late.

No ID, and about $8 — the usual advice does not apply here

Mexico requires no identification to buy or activate a prepaid SIM. You hand over money and walk away connected. There is no passport to copy, no form, no registration delay — which is why an 8-to-10-minute wait is genuinely 8 to 10 minutes.

And our figure for a SIM bought at a Mexican airport is about $8. Read that against the usual airport story, where the counter charges two or three times the online rate and this site tells you to walk past it. That is not what is happening at CUN. Eight dollars, no paperwork, in the terminal you happen to land in, is a reasonable product.

So the honest verdict here is not the one we give at most airports: if you want a physical SIM and a Mexican number, buying it at Cancún airport is a defensible choice.

Where an eSIM still wins

Two places. It is working the moment the aircraft doors open, and on longer trips it goes further per dollar.

The bottom row is the one to look at before deciding anything: 50 GB with a month of validity at $45 is $0.90 a gigabyte, which is the cheapest data in the Mexican market we track. The top row is the lowest entry price we hold anywhere in Mexico. Saily's 1 GB runs seven days rather than three, but at a verified $4.99 it now costs a dollar more than Chido's gigabyte — the extra buys validity, not a lower price.

Mexico is one of a small number of countries where Airalo sells two named products — Chido and Chido Plus — and they overlap on size. A 10 GB month is $18.50 as Chido and $26 as Chido Plus. We cannot tell you what the extra $7.50 buys: Airalo does not publish a host network for any country, so there is nothing on the record to compare. Nor should the names mislead you. Chido is a retail brand, not an operator.

The kiosk has one advantage no eSIM here can match: buy from Telcel and you know exactly whose network you are on. None of Airalo, Saily, Nomad or Holafly publishes that for Mexico — the Mexican operators our data once listed against Holafly's rows came from our own older text rather than from Holafly — and eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could publish one, and eSIMCard does publish host carriers on its country pages, confirmed on its Japanese one, but we have not read its page for this country and hold no network for it here.

Getting out of the airport

This is where having data before you clear customs earns its keep.

The supervised airport taxis work on a voucher bought inside the terminal, at a fixed rate to the Hotel Zone. Buy it inside. The people who approach you on the way out are not the official service, and that is the one piece of advice at CUN that is worth more than any SIM.

The ADO bus runs to the ADO terminal in Cancún city, from where you transfer locally to the Hotel Zone. Cheaper, slower, fine if you are not carrying much.

Uber operates in Cancún but cannot officially collect from the airport — it can drop off only. For the return leg from the Hotel Zone to CUN, Uber works normally.

One note for onward travel

Our notes for this airport say Holbox, three hours north by road and ferry, has no mobile signal at all. We have not verified that and would not build a plan on it either way — but downloading maps, ferry times and accommodation details before you leave Cancún costs nothing and covers you if it is true.
