SIM cards at Irish airports: what is really on sale

First, check whether you need to buy anything

Ireland is in the EU. If your SIM was issued anywhere in the EU or EEA, roam-like-at-home applies and your normal allowance follows you to Dublin at no extra cost. Buying anything at the airport would be money thrown away.

That covers a large share of arrivals here. UK carriers are a separate question — some reinstated European roaming charges after Brexit and some did not — so check your own tariff before you fly rather than assuming either way.

Everyone else, read on.

There are no SIM counters in Ireland

This is the thing that catches people out. Irish airports do not have the carrier desks you find in Sydney or Istanbul. SIMs are sold as a retail product, over the counter of a shop that mostly sells newspapers.

The queue figures are shop queues, so they move with the newspaper-and-sandwich trade rather than with flight arrivals. Three minutes off-peak at Dublin is realistic.

Two consequences follow. First, you get Three Ireland or nothing — Vodafone Ireland and Eir are not sold airside at these airports, whatever you might prefer. Second, Dublin Airport does not sell eSIMs. Physical SIM only. If your phone has no SIM tray, the airport has nothing for you at all.

A prepaid Irish SIM costs about $20 at the airport, and no ID is required — it is an instant purchase off the shelf.

Shannon is the one to plan around

Shannon has no dedicated SIM sales in the arrivals hall. The nearest carrier stores are in Limerick city, about a 30-minute drive away.

That matters more than it sounds, because Shannon is the gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way. Coverage along that coast is variable, and the point at which you most want a working phone — a rented car, an unfamiliar road, patchy signal between villages — is the point at which you are furthest from anywhere selling you a connection.

If you are flying into Shannon, sort your data out before you leave home. There is no fallback in the terminal.

eSIM prices, and where the value sits

Everything on that list beats the roughly $20 shop SIM at Dublin except the largest plans, and even the 50 GB tier — the cheapest per gigabyte we hold for Ireland at $0.84 — is only about twice the price for fifty times the certainty about what you are getting.

The Irish ladder rewards going big, as most do. The 1 GB starter costs nearly five times as much per gigabyte as the 50 GB plan. If you are here for a fortnight and will use maps and a few video calls, the small plan is a false economy.

Which network, and what we can honestly say about it

Ireland's three networks are Three Ireland, Vodafone Ireland and Eir. At Dublin and Cork, the shops sell Three, so a physical SIM bought on arrival puts you on a network you have actually chosen.

With an eSIM, nothing is knowable. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish nothing at all for Ireland — Airalo's "Fáilte" branding is a product name at checkout, not a network, and the Three and Vodafone listing this page used to carry against Nomad's rows was never sourced from Nomad. Holafly's listing names nothing either — the Three, Eir and Vodafone trio this page used to carry against it came from our own data rather than from the seller.

For Dublin, Cork and the main road corridors this hardly matters. For the west coast it might, and that is the one case where a Three SIM bought in a Dublin newsagent has a real advantage over a plan whose network nobody outside the provider can name.
