Buying a SIM card in Ireland: no ID, short queues, and probably unnecessary

First, check whether you need one

Ireland is in the European Union, so roam-like-at-home applies. An EU or EEA SIM works here on your normal domestic allowance with nothing extra to pay, and nothing to buy.

If that is you, stop reading and enjoy the trip. UK visitors should check their own operator, since post-Brexit roaming terms vary between networks. Everyone arriving from further afield is in the market, and the rest of this page is the practical detail.

At the airport

Dublin is the straightforward one, sold through retail outlets rather than a branded desk, in both terminals. Ten minutes at peak is quick by international standards.

Cork is quicker still. Shannon has no dedicated counter at all, and the nearest carrier stores are a 30-minute drive into Limerick — the single strongest argument for pre-installing an eSIM if you are flying into the west.

What you need to bring

Nothing. No ID is required for prepaid SIM purchase in Ireland, and there is no registration step. You pay, you walk out, it works.

This puts Ireland at the easy end of the spectrum. It is a meaningful contrast with countries that require passport-based registration, and it means the airport option is genuinely quick rather than quick in theory.

In the city

Three, Vodafone and Eir all have carrier stores in Dublin, Cork and Galway. These give you the full range of plans rather than the limited starter packs sold through airport retail, which matters if you want something specific.

Three Ireland is the network worth asking for. It has 94%-plus 5G coverage and the fastest average data speeds in the country. Eir claims 99% 5G population coverage, and Vodafone's 4G reaches 99% of the population with 5G expanding through the main cities.

What it costs, and whether it is worth it

An airport or retail SIM runs around $20.

Travel eSIMs start at $3.99 for 1 GB over seven days from Saily, read off its own site on 18 August 2026. Nomad, whose Irish prices we read on 17 August 2026, sells 10 GB over 30 days at $16 and 20 GB at $20. Airalo, whose Ireland prices we read from its own site on 13 August 2026, runs from $4 for a three-day gigabyte to $42 for 50 GB over 30 days — 84 cents a gigabyte at the top end.

So $20 at the counter has to compete with a 20 GB eSIM month, which is what Nomad charges exactly that for. We do not hold a verified allowance for the Irish counter bundles, so we will not declare a winner — but the comparison is not flattering, and the eSIM also saves you the walk to the shop.

Wi-Fi while you decide

Wi-Fi in Ireland is good in hotels, in major cafe chains, and in Starbucks and McDonald's outlets. Dublin city centre has free public Wi-Fi through Dublin Connected. Train stations and intercity buses carry it too.

That is enough to get you from the airport to a hotel and to sort out connectivity properly at your leisure, which is a reasonable plan if you are undecided.

If your phone supports eSIM — iPhone XS and later, most recent Android flagships — buying before you fly means you land connected, with no counter, no queue and no ID either way.
