Nomad's Iceland eSIM undercuts Airalo at every size that matters

An earlier version of this review listed Nomad's Iceland range as five metered plans with no unlimited option, priced at $10.00 for 3GB, $15.00 for 5GB, $23.00 for 10GB and $35.00 for 20GB, and concluded that "Airalo undercuts it by a fifth or more at every size we can compare". Those Nomad figures had never been read off Nomad's checkout. Every one above 3GB was too high, by as much as $15.

Against Airalo, which is the comparison that matters

Airalo's Iceland prices were read off its own site on 13 August 2026. Both columns below are checked.

Airalo holds the small end — its 5GB month is fifty cents cheaper, its 3GB week $1 cheaper than Nomad's 3GB month, and its 1GB starter is $4.00 against Nomad's $4.50, though for three days rather than seven. Saily's 1GB at $3.99 is cheaper still, on a price now read off Saily's own site.

From 10GB upwards Nomad wins, and the gap widens — $3.50 at 10GB, $10.50 at 20GB and $4 at 50GB, in each case against Airalo. Nomad's 50 GB at $0.90 a gigabyte is the lowest verified rate in Iceland, which makes Iceland one of the countries where Nomad, not Airalo, sets the floor.

The unlimited plans go the same way. Nomad's five, seven and ten-day prices — $18, $25 and $33 — each undercut Airalo's $18.50, $26.50 and $34, and its three-day $11 matches Airalo's. Holafly's indicative ten-day unlimited is $32.90, within pennies of Nomad's.

One structural note worth keeping: Nomad charges the identical six metered prices in thirteen countries, Iceland among them — Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden share the same ladder. Iceland is an expensive market and Nomad is not pricing it as one, which is why it wins here and loses in cheaper countries on the same list.

The network listing, which was also wrong

An earlier version of this page said Nomad's own listing pointed to Síminn, Nova and Vodafone Iceland, and treated that as a real if unconfirmed point in its favour. It was not a Nomad claim at all. Nomad publishes no host network for Iceland, or for any of the 47 countries it sells in, and neither do Airalo, Saily or Holafly — the Icelandic carriers once credited to Holafly's own listing came from the same generated data. eSIM Go has no consumer page on which it could publish one. eSIMCard is the only seller of the six that publishes host networks anywhere, but we hold no read of its Icelandic listing.

So no recommendation on this page rests on which network you land on. If you need Síminn specifically for the eastern Ring Road, buy a local SIM — Iceland requires no ID and sells them instantly, at around $20 at Keflavík.

Coverage is geography, not provider choice

Whichever eSIM you buy, Iceland's dead zones are fixed. There is no mobile coverage on the F-roads through the interior — Kjölur, Sprengisandur, the access routes to Landmannalaugar — or in the highlands generally. Minor roads in the remote Westfjords are unreliable, as are some fjord valleys in the north and east. Download offline maps for anything off the Ring Road; no plan from any provider substitutes for that.

Nomad lists hotspot tethering as supported across its Iceland plans, which matters here — sharing a connection between two people in a hire car is the normal Ring Road use case.

Verdict

Buy Nomad in Iceland for anything from 10GB up. It is the cheapest 10GB, the cheapest 20GB and the cheapest 50GB in the country, all on prices we have read off its own site, and its unlimited plans undercut Airalo's at every length it sells them.

Buy Airalo below that: 5GB for $12 and 3GB for $8 over a week, or Saily's $3.99 gigabyte if a long weekend in Reykjavík is the whole trip.
