Vodafone Iceland SIM card: starter kits, where they are sold, and what we could not read
Vodafone in Iceland is run by Sýn. Its prepaid starter kits are sold at Keflavik airport, in two cities and at N1 stations. We could not read any prices.
A Vodafone Iceland SIM card is the easiest of Iceland's three local SIMs to collect on arrival, based on where the company says it sells them. The operator is Sýn: vodafone.is redirects to syn.is, and its English page carries the Vodafone name. We read its pages on 8 October 2026 and could not read a price list or any eSIM information, so this page is thinner than we would like.
Which Vodafone Iceland SIM card can a visitor buy?
Sýn's English page lists prepaid SIM cards, 3G/4G internet and a "Prepaid 4G/5G Internet - Starter kit". Its Vodafone Premium Starter Pack, with 50 minutes of overseas calls, is described as available only on board Icelandair flights. It gives no prices on the pages we reached, and says nothing about eSIM. Its price list and webshop pages are where the figures live, and we did not get readable content from them.
Where can you buy a Vodafone Iceland SIM card?
Sýn's locations page is the most useful. Starter kits are sold at Keflavik International Airport (the 10-11 shop in the arrival hall and the Elko stores), the Sýn store at Sudurlandsbraut 8 in Reykjavik, the Sýn store at Glerartorg Mall in Akureyri, in 10-11 stores, at all N1 petrol stations, and in many hotels, tourist information centres and tourist shops. A list of partners in regional towns follows. Call 599 9000 or 1414 within Iceland for questions.
Does Vodafone Iceland need ID for a prepaid SIM?
Nothing we read says. Neither the English page nor the locations page mentions an ID or passport requirement.
Vodafone Iceland SIM card coverage
Sýn's coverage page explains how to read its map, which shows estimated coverage in three shades from a strong signal usable indoors to a weak one where outdoor reception may be patchy and indoor reception poor. It says the map is a computer forecast for ground-floor reception, so buildings, vegetation and weather can reduce real signal. It gives no percentage of population and no 4G or 5G split in the pages we read. Our Iceland notes call the Ring Road about 90 percent covered on 4G with gaps in the east and north-east; that note is unverified and not from Sýn.
Vodafone Iceland or a travel eSIM?
The advantage here is a physical SIM that you can pick up in the arrival hall, with a long list of other sales points if you decide on the road. If you prefer to be connected before you land, a travel eSIM installed at home avoids the queue. See our Iceland comparison and the cheapest eSIM page. The local alternatives are Nova, which sells a travel eSIM, and Siminn, which sells a 3,000 kr starter pack online. The Iceland hub has the wider guide.
What we could not confirm
Prices, data allowances, validity of the starter kit, eSIM availability and any ID rule. Sýn's mobile settings page gives APN details for those who need them but nothing commercial. We have not tested the service.
Common questions
Is a Vodafone Iceland SIM card good for tourists?
It is convenient, because Sýn says starter kits are sold in the Keflavik arrival hall, at N1 stations and at 10-11 stores. We could not read prices or eSIM details, so compare the cost with a travel eSIM before relying on it.
Where can I buy a Vodafone Iceland SIM at Keflavik airport?
Sýn's locations page names the 10-11 shop in the arrival hall and the Elko stores at Keflavik International Airport. It also lists Reykjavik, Akureyri, all N1 petrol stations and many hotels. Opening hours are not given on that page.
Does Vodafone Iceland have an eSIM?
Nothing on the Sýn pages we read mentions an eSIM for prepaid. We found physical starter kits only. If you need an eSIM, Nova's page describes one for visitors, or you can use a travel eSIM.
How much is a Vodafone Iceland prepaid SIM?
We could not read a price. Sýn's English page lists a Prepaid 4G/5G Internet starter kit without a figure, and links to a price list and webshop that returned no usable content to us. Check Sýn's site or ask at the shop.
Do I need a passport to buy a Vodafone Iceland SIM?
The Sýn pages we read do not mention an ID or passport requirement for prepaid starter kits. We cannot confirm that none is needed, so carry your passport with you when you buy one in person.
