How to activate Holafly eSIM: the short version

How to activate Holafly eSIM: arrive at your destination, turn the eSIM line on, choose it as your mobile data line, and switch on data roaming for it. Holafly's help centre says that is all activation is. Installation is a separate earlier step. Because the two are separate, Holafly activation is something you do on purpose, in the country, rather than something that happens when you scan the code.

Holafly eSIM activation versus installation

Holafly describes setup as two stages. Installation adds the eSIM profile to the phone and is usually done before you travel. Activation switches on the plan and mobile data and is usually done after you land. Holafly advises installing a day or more before departure on home Wi-Fi, and activating during the flight or when you arrive. How to activate Holafly on iPhone

How to activate Holafly eSIM on an iPhone, per Holafly's setup guide:

1. In Settings, open Cellular (or Mobile Service). Turn off your home SIM and any other eSIMs.
2. Select the new Holafly eSIM and make sure its line is on.
3. Turn on Data Roaming and confirm if asked.
4. Under Cellular Data or Mobile Data, select the Holafly eSIM as the data line.
5. Turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching so the phone does not switch lines by itself.

Holafly's iPhone guide adds a way to confirm it worked: look for at least one signal bar, or check that Data Roaming is on in the Holafly settings. It also notes an iPhone may activate the plan straight away after installation, so if you are still at home, turn off roaming on your other data plans and the Holafly line until you arrive.

How to activate Holafly on Android

On Samsung and other Android phones, Holafly's steps are:

1. In SIM Manager, turn off other active SIMs and turn on the new eSIM.
2. Set the eSIM as the mobile data line.
3. Under Mobile Networks, turn on data roaming for the eSIM.

Menu names differ by brand. Holafly publishes separate guides for Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Huawei, Xiaomi and Motorola.

What starts the clock?

Holafly says a day-based eSIM starts when the phone connects to a local network at your destination with data roaming on, not when you install it. After that, days keep counting even if you turn the line off or switch to another eSIM. Holafly says the status in your account moves from pending to install, to installed and ready, to installed and in use, and that "in use" means the plan is running. Monthly or annual plans can start their billing cycle at purchase.

What if you cannot activate your Holafly eSIM?

If you cannot activate Holafly, its advice is to check three things: the eSIM is on, it is selected for mobile data, and data roaming is on for it. It names missing data roaming as the most common cause of failed activation. On a dual-SIM phone, temporarily switch off the other SIMs if they block data. And do not delete the eSIM. What the pages do not say

Holafly's setup guide does not give a time limit between installing and activating, and it does not state how long a plan stays usable if you install it weeks early.
