How does Holafly work? Buy, install at home, switch on abroad

Holafly sells travel eSIMs. You buy online, install a digital SIM profile before you go, then switch it on when you land. Here is the sequence, and the parts people get wrong.

How does Holafly work, in one paragraph?

How does Holafly work? Holafly is a company that sells travel eSIMs, which are digital SIM profiles that go on your phone so you do not need a physical card. You pick a destination and a number of days on holafly.com or in its app, pay, and get installation details by email. You install the profile at home on Wi-Fi, and you switch it on once you are in the country. That is the whole sequence. The part that surprises people is the timing, so we cover it below.

What is Holafly, exactly?

If you are asking what is Holafly, the short answer is a seller of data-only eSIMs for travel. Holafly's site says it covers more than 200 destinations, and it offers limited and unlimited data plans. It also sells regional plans, and a Global eSIM that covers over 200 destinations, so one profile can serve several countries. Longer stays can use its monthly or annual plans instead of a day-based one.

Holafly's help centre says a Holafly eSIM does not replace your physical SIM. The two can sit side by side. On a dual-SIM phone only one of them can carry mobile data at a time.

How to use Holafly eSIM: the order of events

Holafly's own guides break it into steps, and we have kept them in that order.

  1. Check your phone first. It must support eSIM and be unlocked from its original carrier. A locked phone cannot install a plan from another provider. See our page on Holafly compatible phones.
  2. Choose a destination and days. Holafly says the calendar only counts days. Your plan does not start on the dates you pick; it starts when you activate at your destination.
  3. Buy it. Holafly says that, for now, eSIMs for different destinations must be bought in separate checkouts.
  4. Install it at home. Use stable, private Wi-Fi, and keep the battery above 20 percent or keep the phone charging. You can scan the QR code, type the details by hand, or use the Holafly app. Holafly puts the setup at about three to five minutes.
  5. Keep it switched off until you arrive. Installing does not start the plan or use data.
  6. Activate at your destination. Turn the line on, select it for mobile data and switch data roaming on. The detailed taps are in our guide on how to activate Holafly.

What do Holafly's instructions say for iPhone and Android?

Holafly's instructions for iPhone and Android differ only in menu names. The principle is the same on both. The line must be on, chosen as the mobile data line, and have data roaming enabled. Holafly calls missing data roaming the most common reason an activation fails.

On iPhone, Holafly also tells you to turn off the setting that lets the phone switch data lines automatically, so it does not quietly fall back to your home SIM. If you keep your home SIM on for calls, your home carrier may still charge for calls and texts, which is a point Holafly makes itself.

How does Holafly work out when the days start counting?

Holafly says a day-based trip eSIM does not start when you install it. The clock starts when the phone connects to a local network at your destination with data roaming on. A status of "on" or "active" straight after installation is normal and means only that the profile is ready. Holafly adds that once the plan is running, days keep counting even if you turn the line off.

Monthly or annual plans are different. Holafly says the billing cycle can begin at purchase, whether or not you have used data.

How does Holafly work if you need more days?

Holafly says you can add days or new trips to an installed eSIM without a new QR code. For that reason it tells you not to delete the profile. A deleted eSIM generally cannot be reinstalled and usually needs replacing. You can follow remaining days or data in the app or on the website.

What does Holafly not say?

Holafly's setup page links out to a separate article about exactly when validity begins, and the answer is the one above. The pages we read do not give a time limit for installing before you travel beyond advice to install a day or more ahead. For the unlimited plans, Holafly's terms say the network provider can restrict speed or use if it judges usage excessive. So how does Holafly work in practice? Install early, activate on arrival, and keep the profile. Our Holafly review looks at what that means for price, and cheapest eSIM compares it with other providers.

If something goes wrong, start with Holafly eSIM not working.

We have not tested Holafly's plans, app or support ourselves. This page is desk research from Holafly's own site and help centre, read on 8 October 2026, and Holafly changes its rules from time to time.

Common questions

How does Holafly work?

You buy a destination plan by number of days, install the eSIM profile at home on Wi-Fi, and switch it on at your destination with data roaming enabled. Holafly says a day-based plan starts when your phone connects to a local network there, not when you install it, so installing early costs no days.

What is Holafly?

Holafly is a seller of travel eSIMs. Its site says it covers more than 200 destinations, with limited and unlimited data plans, regional plans, a Global eSIM and longer monthly or annual plans. The eSIMs are data only, and they sit alongside your physical SIM rather than replacing it.

How to use Holafly eSIM if I have never used an eSIM?

Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, buy the plan, and install it on stable Wi-Fi by QR code, manual entry or the Holafly app. Holafly puts setup at about three to five minutes. When you arrive, turn the line on, select it for mobile data and enable data roaming.

Where are the Holafly instructions?

Holafly publishes step-by-step guides in its FAQ and setup pages, with device-specific versions for iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Huawei, Xiaomi and Motorola, plus videos for iPhone, Samsung and Pixel. The iPhone and Android steps differ mainly in menu names; the three settings are the same.

Can I use Holafly and my normal SIM together?

Yes. Holafly says the eSIM does not replace your physical SIM, and the two can sit side by side. On a dual-SIM phone only one can carry mobile data at a time, and your home carrier may still charge for calls and texts on your home line, which is why Holafly suggests turning off roaming there.
