Should you buy Nomad's Albania eSIM?

Nomad's Albanian range has been read off nomadesim.com, so the figures below are what you will actually be charged rather than numbers we inferred:

Unlimited sits alongside the metered range at $11 for three days, $18 for five, $25 for a week and $33 for ten days.

An earlier version of this page had only two Albanian packages, at $9 and $25, and concluded that Nomad was the most expensive eSIM in the country. Those figures were ours, not Nomad's, and they were wrong in the worst direction — roughly double. The verdict below is the opposite of the one this page used to reach.

Hotspot tethering is supported, so one Nomad eSIM can feed a laptop or a second phone.

The comparison is close, and Nomad edges it

Albania is one of the cheaper eSIM markets in Europe, and Nomad is now priced for it.

The pattern holds at every metered size: Nomad comes in a dollar or two under Airalo, and the gap widens as the plans get bigger. At the small end the difference is trivial — a gigabyte is $4 either way, though Nomad gives you a week to use it and Airalo three days. At 20GB it is $3, which is real money on a $36 purchase.

Above that, Airalo stops. Nomad's 50GB for $49 over a month has no Airalo equivalent in Albania at all, and at 98 cents a gigabyte it is the cheapest metered data anyone sells here.

Unlimited is the one place Airalo answers back: $20.50 for three days against Nomad's $11 is a straightforward loss for Airalo, but at a week Airalo's $36.50 and Nomad's $25 tell the same story. Holafly's unlimited starts at $28.90 for five days, read off its own site on 18 August 2026.

Nobody will tell you which network you get

Nomad publishes no host carrier — not for Albania, and not for any of the 47 countries where we have now read its prices directly off its site. We hold no host network for it anywhere.

An earlier version of this page said Nomad's own listing pointed to a specific Albanian carrier. That did not come from Nomad; it came from our own generated data, and it was an invention. Airalo does not publish a host network for Albania either, and no host network in our Albania data has been confirmed with the carrier it names.

In practice this matters less here than it would elsewhere. Albania's three networks all cover the coast, the main roads and the cities adequately, so the question of which one you land on rarely decides a trip. Where coverage does fail, it fails for everyone.

Where Albanian coverage actually breaks

No eSIM fixes the country's real coverage problem, which is terrain. The Accursed Mountains — Bjeshkët e Namuna — have extensive dead zones, and the Theth-to-Valbona hiking corridor runs through them. Remote highland villages and some inland mountain valleys are also patchy.

The Llogara Pass is worth calling out separately: the main road over it is covered, so a coastal drive is fine, but do not assume that extends to everything either side of the tarmac.

If you are hiking rather than driving, download offline maps before you leave a town, and treat any eSIM's coverage claim in the highlands with scepticism. This is a country where a paper backup plan still earns its place.

The verdict, and the local option

Nomad is a good buy in Albania. It is cheaper than Airalo at every metered size we can compare, it sells further up the range than Airalo does, and its prices are ones we have checked rather than estimated.

The reservation is the one that applies to Airalo and Saily equally: you are buying without knowing whose towers you will be on. If that matters to you, no eSIM sold for Albania will satisfy it.

A local prepaid SIM costs around $8 at the airport, which no longer undercuts anything — Nomad's gigabyte is half that, and its 3GB month matches it. The catch with a local SIM is registration: Albania requires a passport or ID document, so it is a counter transaction rather than a scan-and-go. Buy one for the coverage certainty, not to save money.
