US Cellular USA SIM card: prepaid is suspended and customers moved to T-Mobile

UScellular's wireless business was sold to T-Mobile. T-Mobile's page says UScellular prepaid can no longer be renewed, so it is not a visitor option.

Is a US Cellular USA SIM card an option for a visitor?

No, not now. T-Mobile's page for UScellular prepaid customers says they can no longer renew service and invites them to join T-Mobile's network brand to keep their number. T-Mobile blocked direct reads of its pages, so what follows comes from search excerpts.

What happened to UScellular?

T-Mobile announced in May 2024 an agreement to acquire UScellular's wireless operations and select spectrum for $4.4 billion including assumed debt. T-Mobile's later results reported adding prepaid customers through the acquisition in the third quarter of 2025. Its transition page for prepaid says the UScellular prepaid account and service are suspended, with the device limited to 911, 988 and 611 calls to Customer Care. Customers could switch to T-Mobile or another provider to keep their number through 31 August. The page does not state a year in what we saw, and that date may already have passed.

What does that mean for a visitor?

We found no UScellular tourist SIM, and we found no page describing one. With prepaid renewals ended, a visitor should not plan around a UScellular SIM. Any old UScellular SIM you come across is likely to be suspended. The regional coverage that UScellular once offered is now part of T-Mobile's network, but we could not verify the details of how coverage has been merged.

What should a visitor look at instead?

T-Mobile has a U.S. Pass eSIM aimed at international visitors, bought and activated in the US. AT&T sells eSIM by AT&T for travellers, and Verizon sells prepaid with no credit check and an eSIM set up in its app. A travel eSIM bought before you fly is the other route. The USA comparison page lines them up.

US Cellular coverage

We read no coverage claim on a live UScellular page. Third-party guides describe UScellular as a regional carrier, which is consistent with the sale. For coverage you should check T-Mobile's map now, especially in rural areas where UScellular was strong.
