US SIM cards and travel eSIMs, compared on price

The short answer

For a week or less, a travel eSIM wins on price and convenience. Saily starts at $3.99 for 1GB over 7 days and Airalo's Change package at $4 for 1GB over 3 days, both read from the providers' own sites on 13 August 2026. For a longer stay, or if you want a US number that can make calls and receive texts, a local prepaid SIM at around $20 is the better buy. Buying local: cheap, everywhere, no paperwork

T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon all sell prepaid SIMs with no ID required, and the purchase is instant. Where you buy changes the price more than which carrier you pick.

Target and Best Buy stock them too. US Cellular exists but is regional, and there is no reason for a visitor to seek it out.

The airport premium is small in absolute terms — a few dollars. If you land late and want a working line before you leave the terminal, paying it is defensible. If you are passing a Walmart in the first day or two anyway, don't.

What the travel eSIMs charge

Five providers cover the US. Prices marked verified were read from the provider's own site on 13 August 2026. The rest are indicative and worth re-checking before you buy.

That is a spread of nearly five to one between the cheapest entry plan and the cheapest per-GB plan. Buying small repeatedly is the expensive way to use an eSIM here.

Airalo sells two packages for the US, badged Change and Change+, and every Airalo row above is Change. Change+ costs roughly a third more for the same allowance over the same window: $19 against $13.50 for 5GB over 30 days, $30 against $22.50 for 10GB over 30 days, $59 against $42 for 50GB over 30 days. All six figures are verified. What the extra buys is not stated by Airalo, so do not assume it is a coverage or speed upgrade — we have no basis for saying that. What you can do is read the package name and make sure it is the one you priced.

Airalo's unlimited plans, sold under the Change name, run $11.50 for 3 days, $25 for 7 days and $68 for 30. The 30-day unlimited only beats the $42 Change 50GB pack if you would genuinely burn through more than about 80GB.

Coverage decides more than price outside the cities

T-Mobile is the network we would point most visitors at: best 5G availability and speeds in cities, and solid across suburbs. Measured 5G availability sits above 91% of the time, with a median all-technology download speed of 259 Mbps in the second half of 2025. The nationwide average speed travellers actually see is closer to 52 Mbps.

The exception is road trips. Verizon is the one to have for rural driving and national parks. Weak spots apply to every carrier: the rural Great Plains through Wyoming, Montana and Nevada; national park backcountry such as the Grand Canyon inner canyon and the Yellowstone wilderness; the remote Alaskan interior; and long desert highway stretches.

This matters for eSIM choice because the host network is not yours to pick, and in the US none of the providers will even tell you what it is. Not one of the sellers states a US host network in our data — not Nomad, Saily or eSIMCard, and not Airalo, whose Change and Change+ are its own product names rather than carriers. eSIM Go, whose row appears above, has no consumer page on which it could state one. If the network matters to your route, buy locally and pick it yourself.

Which one for your trip

If you need to be reachable on a US number — a rental car desk, a restaurant, anyone who will text you a code — that alone settles it in favour of a local SIM. Most travel eSIM plans are data-only, though Airalo is the exception in this list and sells plans that include calls and SMS.
