Nomad in the UAE: the ranking we withdrew, restored

The ranking we withdrew, and why it is back

An earlier version of this page refused to rank Nomad in the Emirates. It said we would not re-rank an unverified ladder against three other unverified ladders and one verified one and call the result a comparison. That was the right call at the time: none of Nomad's UAE prices had been read off a checkout, and neither had any of its prices in the other 46 countries where we carry it.

That is no longer true. Nomad's UAE prices were read off its own site on 17 August 2026, along with the rest of its 436 rows across 47 countries. All of them are verified. And the five figures we had been carrying were wrong — every one of them too high, by between 12% and 32%.

So the ranking is available again, and it is one-sided.

At $1.45 a gigabyte, that 20 GB month is the cheapest data in the Emirates. The cheapest rate anyone else has confirmed is $2.35.

Against the other verified ladder

Airalo's seventeen UAE plans were read off its own site on 13 August 2026. Both columns below are checked figures, so this is a straight comparison rather than a guess against a measurement.

There is no rung where Airalo wins. The gap runs from a third at 1 GB to $19.50 at 20 GB, and it holds across the unlimited plans as well. Against the unverified field, Nomad is beaten only at the very bottom, where Saily's indicative $3.99 for 1 GB over seven days comes in under Nomad's $4.

What we got wrong, and what it cost

The figures this page carried before had Nomad's 20 GB, 10 GB and 5 GB all dearer than they are. Two consequences followed from that, and both were wrong.

The first was a claim that $1.75 a gigabyte — a number we no longer hold — could not be defended as the country's cheapest rate. The real figure is $1.45, and it is defensible, because it has been read off the seller's site.

The second was subtler and worse. We reasoned that the corpus which understated Airalo by 23% to 31% had probably distorted Nomad in the same direction, so Nomad's apparent advantage was likely an artefact. It distorted Nomad in the opposite direction. The advantage was real and larger than we showed.

But does a UAE trip need 20 GB?

Usually not, and that is worth saying whichever seller you end up with.

A week in the Emirates is a light-data week. Hotels, malls, restaurants and both major airports carry your traffic on their own wireless. What runs over mobile data is navigation, ride-hailing, messaging and photos syncing — a few gigabytes across a week for most visitors, not twenty.

Twenty gigabytes makes sense if you are tethering a laptop through a working week, taking daily video calls, streaming in the evenings, or staying a month rather than a week. That is a real group, and it is the one Nomad's ladder is shaped for: doubling from ten to twenty gigabytes costs $10.50 more and cuts the rate by 22%, the steepest improvement on the ladder.

The wider point stands regardless. The metered ladder in the Emirates stops at 20 GB from every seller we hold, Nomad included. There is no 50 GB month here, and that absence is most of why UAE data costs what it does — in the markets that have one, it is where the cheap gigabytes live.

The network listing we withdrew

An earlier version of this page said two of Nomad's five UAE rows carried "du" and flagged it as the provider's unconfirmed listing. It has since been removed altogether. Nomad publishes no host network for the UAE, and it publishes none anywhere — the same is true of Airalo and Saily. The Etisalat and du listings our data used to carry against eSIMCard, Holafly and Saily rows all came from our own records, and none of those companies names a carrier for the Emirates.

Coverage is a weak axis to choose on here in any case. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah are 5G throughout. The signal thins in the Hajar Mountains — particularly the road tunnels on the Al Ain to Fujairah highway — and in deep desert beyond the settlements. Download offline maps if either is on your route.

Calling, ID and the verdict

UAE networks block calling over the internet by regulation: WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, Skype and Zoom audio do not work on a local Emirati line, though WhatsApp text messaging does. Travellers using international eSIMs generally report that calling goes through, and BOTIM and C'Me are the government-approved alternatives, but we have not tested this on Nomad. Ask if it matters to you.

Buying an eSIM needs no paperwork. We hold no verified ID rule and no local SIM price for the Emirates, so the usual local-versus-eSIM comparison is one this site cannot make here.

The verdict is now a recommendation rather than a shortlist. Nomad is the cheapest verified seller in the UAE at every size and every duration it offers, and the margins are wide enough that price drift would not close them.
