Buying a SIM at Phuket Airport (HKT): the one Thai airport where the counter earns its queue

The counter at HKT buys you something no eSIM can

Phuket is the gateway to the Andaman island circuit — Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Lanta, the Similans — and carrier choice matters more here than it does at either Bangkok airport. Our notes rate AIS as having the widest coverage across Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and the wider Andaman chain. If you are heading out to a pier tomorrow morning, that is not a detail.

Here is the part that other pages get wrong, including an earlier version of this one. No eSIM provider we cover publishes a host network for Thailand. Airalo, Saily, Nomad, eSIM Go and eSIMCard all leave the field blank — every one of them, for every Thai plan we hold. So the advice to "install an AIS-network eSIM before departure and go straight to the pier" describes a product that does not exist as far as we can tell. Nobody can sell you a verified AIS eSIM, and nobody should imply they can.

Which leaves the arrivals hall as the only place to choose your carrier deliberately. That is a genuine reason to queue, and it is close to the only one we publish anywhere on this site.

The counters and the wait

AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H all have counters in the arrivals hall. The AIS branding is orange and easy to spot from a distance, which is useful when you are looking for one operator in particular.

Queue times are 12 to 15 minutes at peak and about 5 minutes off-peak. The peak is the afternoon bank of European and Middle Eastern arrivals — long-haul flights landing within an hour or two of each other. A passport is required, and the registration itself is quick.

We hold no opening hours for HKT, and nothing on where in the hall the counters stand relative to baggage reclaim or customs. If your flight lands late enough that shops might be shut, we cannot tell you whether these will be.

Who should skip the counter anyway

If your Phuket trip is Patong, Kata, Karon and the main island road network — no ferries, no remote bays — then the carrier question stops mattering and price takes over. Our record puts a typical Thai airport SIM at around $10. These eSIM prices were read from the providers' own Thai checkouts on 13 August 2026:

Ten gigabytes over a fortnight for $10.50 is roughly what the counter wants for a tourist package, with no queue and no form to fill in. And Thailand's ladder does not stop at the small sizes: 50 GB for 30 days at $27.50 works out at $0.55 per gigabyte, which is the cheapest rate anywhere in our data, in any country. A long stay in southern Thailand is one of the best-value data markets in the world, provided you buy the big plan rather than a string of small ones.

The honest framing for Phuket is a trade, not a winner. The eSIM is cheaper per gigabyte and saves you the queue; the counter is the only way to pick the network our notes say covers the islands best. Which of those matters depends entirely on your itinerary, not on your budget.

Onward from the airport

There is no train at Phuket. Taxis run metered or can be booked in advance; Grab is often cheaper and easier to deal with; and the Smart Bus runs to Phuket Bus Terminal 2 for onward connections, more slowly. All three are easier with data already working, and the Grab option is effectively unavailable without it.

If you are connecting straight to a pier for a morning boat, that argues for arriving connected regardless of what you do about a local SIM — you can always add a counter SIM later in town if island coverage turns out to matter.
