Buying a SIM card in Slovakia

Most visitors should buy nothing

Slovakia is in the EU, so an EU or EEA SIM roams here at home rates on your usual allowance. For the majority of arrivals in Bratislava — Austrians on a day trip, Czechs, Poles, Germans, anyone flying in on a European line — the correct amount to spend is zero.

The rest of this page is for everyone else: visitors from outside the EU/EEA, and EU travellers whose allowance is too thin for a fortnight of maps and video calls.

Where the SIMs actually are

Bratislava Airport (Milan Rastislav Štefánik, BTS) sells Slovak Telekom and Orange SIMs through a newsstand rather than a carrier counter. Queue at peak is about 5 minutes. Options are limited — this is a small airport and a small retail operation.

In the city, Slovak Telekom and Orange run stores on Obchodná street in the centre of Bratislava and in the main shopping malls. Full range, staff who can explain the tariffs.

A prepaid SIM runs about $9 in either place, which is cheap by European standards and cheap enough that the usual airport-versus-city argument barely applies. We do not hold what data allowance $9 includes, so treat it as the price of getting a working Slovak line rather than as a figure to set against a data plan gigabyte for gigabyte.

One requirement, and it is not negotiable: a passport is required to register the SIM, at the airport newsstand and in city stores alike. Slovakia has no anonymous prepaid SIM, so bring the physical document.

Slovakia's three networks are Slovak Telekom, Orange Slovakia and O2 Slovakia. Only the first two are sold at the airport.

The wifi is good enough to wait

If you are undecided, you can stall for a day without much pain. Hotel, café and restaurant wifi is good across the country, and Bratislava has free public wifi in the historic centre — which is where a first-time visitor spends most of their first day anyway. In the mountains, ski lodges have wifi.

That is a reasonable argument for skipping the airport and buying in town, or for buying nothing until you know whether you actually need it.

What an eSIM costs

Slovakia has one of the better big-plan prices on this site. Airalo's verified 50 GB at $36 is $0.72 a gigabyte — cheaper per unit than anything else we hold for the country, and less than a fifth of the rate on the 1 GB starter. Anyone assuming the Slovak market stops at a 20 GB tier is leaving the best value on the table.

At the small end, an eSIM undercuts the $9 shop SIM outright and skips the passport step entirely: no ID is required at the point of purchase, because there is no Slovak line being registered in your name. Your device does need eSIM support — broadly iPhone XS and later, and most Android flagships from 2021 onwards. Our eSIM compatible phones list has the detail.

Which network you get

At a shop you choose: Slovak Telekom or Orange, in front of you.

With a travel eSIM, nothing is knowable. Airalo, Saily and Nomad publish no host network for Slovakia — Airalo's "Dobrý deň" branding is the product name at checkout, not a carrier. Holafly lists nothing either. Our data used to carry "T-Mobile SK / Orange" against it, using a brand name Slovakia's incumbent has not traded under for years — which was the clue: the entry came from our own older text rather than from Holafly, which names no carrier in any country.

For Bratislava, Košice and the motorway between them, none of this changes much. For the High Tatras it might — and if a specific network matters to you, the shop on Obchodná is the only place you can be certain what you are buying.
