Nomad in New Zealand: the range we listed was a quarter of the real one

What we had, and what Nomad actually sells

This page used to list two Nomad plans for New Zealand — 1GB for 7 days at $4 and 3GB for 30 days at $10 — call that the whole range, and conclude that a two-week trip had to be bought elsewhere. Neither price was right and the range was wrong by seven plans.

Nomad's New Zealand prices were read off nomadesim.com on 17 August 2026:

There are four uncapped plans alongside them: $11 for three days, $18 for five, $25 for seven and $33 for ten.

So the old verdict — competent, slightly expensive, too thin for the trips people take here — was wrong on the last two counts. Nomad sells the range a South Island itinerary needs, and above 5GB it is the cheapest verified way to buy it.

Against the field

Airalo's New Zealand prices were read from its site on 13 August 2026, and Saily's and Holafly's from their own on 18 August. eSIMCard's rows have been withdrawn: we read its own pages on 18 August 2026, found the figures we held were wrong, and could not store the real ones. Nomad is the cheapest plan in the country at all four sizes. It is 99 cents under Saily at 3GB and at 5GB, and the gap widens sharply above that — six dollars at 10GB and ten dollars at 20GB, against two rivals that price a cent apart from each other.

The entry rung goes the other way. Nomad's 1GB week is $4.50, against Saily's verified $3.99 for the same shape and Airalo's verified $4 for three days. If one gigabyte is all you want, Nomad is the dearest of the three.

Nomad also has no 50GB plan here. Airalo's verified 50GB month at $49 is 98 cents a gigabyte and remains the best rate in our New Zealand data; Nomad's 20GB at $1.40 is second.

Uncapped, and where it stops

Nomad's unlimited ladder undercuts Airalo's verified one at every length the two share: $11 against $11.50 at three days, $18 against $18.50 at five, $25 against $27 at seven and $33 against $34.50 at ten. Holafly's verified ladder is dearer than both at every one of those lengths — $11.90, $20.50, $27.50 and $36.50 — though it does sell 15-day and 30-day passes that Nomad does not.

For most people the metered plans win anyway. Nomad's 20GB month at $28 costs less than its own ten-day unlimited at $33, and 20GB across a fortnight of driving is not easy to exhaust when large parts of the route have no signal at all.

Hotspot tethering is supported on the New Zealand plans. Holafly's are listed without it, which rules Holafly out before price does if a laptop is travelling with you.

The network claim we have withdrawn

This page used to say Nomad listed its New Zealand network as One NZ / Spark, and built a warning around the ordering — that One NZ first was the reverse of what a South Island trip wants.

That was wrong at the root. Nomad publishes no host network for New Zealand. It publishes none for any of the 47 countries we hold its prices for; every network field against it in our data is empty. There was no listing to read an ordering out of, so both the claim and the warning are gone.

Airalo is in the same position. So are Saily and Holafly, whatever the Spark NZ / One NZ entries our data used to carry against them suggested. The same pair sat against eSIMCard's rows in our data, and came from our own text rather than from eSIMCard.

Where the network would have mattered

The underlying point survives the correction, because it was never really about Nomad. Spark is the only carrier our notes credit with coverage on the Milford Road towards Milford Sound, the West Coast and remote South Island routes. One NZ is good in urban areas and has significant rural gaps, which New Zealand's low population density and rugged terrain make expensive to close.

A visitor who spends the trip in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch will not notice. A visitor driving Highway 6 might notice for hours at a time. Since no travel eSIM here will sell you Spark by name, the way to get it is a local prepaid pack — about $15 at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown airport, or from a supermarket, with no ID required.

And some of it is moot. Milford Sound has no mobile signal from any carrier and is famous for it. Nor do Fiordland National Park, the West Coast hinterland, Central Otago back roads, remote sections of the Abel Tasman coastal track or the area around the Tongariro Alpine Crossing summit. Download offline maps and your bookings before you leave the last town, whatever you are carrying. Where there is signal it is quick: the national average we record is 72 Mbps.

Verdict

Buy Nomad for New Zealand at 10GB or 20GB, where its verified prices are the lowest in the country and the margin over Airalo is $6 to $10. The 20GB month at $28 is the plan for a two-week self-drive loop, and it costs less than five days of anyone's unlimited.

Look elsewhere for a single gigabyte, where three rivals are cheaper, and for 50GB, which only Airalo sells. And if the Milford Road decides your trip, buy a Spark SIM at the counter — no eSIM in this market can promise you that network, at any price.
