KPN Netherlands SIM card: the 4.99 EUR prepaid SIM and why there is no prepaid eSIM
KPN sells a prepaid SIM for 4.99 EUR, posted or bought in a KPN store. Its eSIM page says eSIM is not possible on prepaid, so visitors get a plastic SIM only.
A KPN Netherlands SIM card is a plastic prepaid SIM, not a visitor package. KPN's own eSIM page says an eSIM is not possible on prepaid, which rules out the instant digital route that tourists often want. We read KPN's pages on 8 October 2026. KPN also lists a TravelSIM on its home page, but we could not find details of it.
Which KPN Netherlands SIM card can a visitor buy?
KPN's prepaid shop page lists the SIM at a one-off 4.99 EUR. It comes without a data bundle: when you activate it, you choose an internet bundle, a calls and SMS bundle, or both. The page does not give prepaid bundle prices, and the Sim Only prices shown nearby are for two-year contracts, which are not for visitors. Register the SIM in the KPN Prepaid app for the first time and KPN says you get a 7.50 EUR bonus, requested through a form in the app.
You can order online and have the SIM posted, with KPN saying orders before 18:00 should arrive within two working days, or buy the package in a KPN store. The page does not say whether posting to a hotel or foreign address is possible, so assume a Dutch address is needed until KPN says otherwise.
Does a KPN prepaid SIM need ID?
KPN's shop page does not say. The registration page we read describes verifying a phone number by SMS, paying by credit card or a one-cent bank verification, and setting a PIN; it does not mention ID or a Dutch address. We cannot tell you whether a shop will ask for one.
Can a tourist use KPN with an eSIM?
Not on prepaid, going by KPN. Its eSIM page says eSIM is available on all KPN mobile subscriptions with a compatible device, and states "het is niet mogelijk bij prepaid", meaning it is not possible with prepaid. The Sim Only subscriptions shown on KPN's page are on two-year contracts, which do not suit a visit. If you want an eSIM for a Dutch trip, look at Odido's SimWallet, which is a prepaid data eSIM, or a travel eSIM on our Netherlands comparison and the cheapest eSIM page.
KPN Netherlands SIM card validity, top-ups and EU use
Credit does not expire, but you must use the number at least once every six months by calling, texting, using data or topping up. Top-ups are free online, with a top-up card or in the app, including from abroad. KPN says rates in the EU match those in the Netherlands, and bundles work in both at no extra cost. Outside the EU, international rates apply.
KPN coverage and 5G
KPN's prepaid pages and home page that we read give no coverage percentage or 4G/5G statement. Our Netherlands notes describe KPN as the top-ranked network in an outside benchmark; that came from our own data, so we do not repeat it as a KPN claim. Check KPN's coverage map if you are heading to the Wadden islands or the countryside.
KPN or a travel eSIM?
For a short trip, a travel eSIM bought before you fly is faster than a SIM that has to be posted or collected, and you can buy data without a Dutch bank. KPN's SIM makes more sense for several weeks, or if you want a Dutch number and the 7.50 EUR bonus. The other two networks have their own pages: Odido and Vodafone Netherlands. The Netherlands hub has the wider guide.
What KPN's pages do not say
Prepaid bundle prices, ID rules, TravelSIM details, whether a SIM can be posted abroad, and coverage numbers. We have not tested the service.
Common questions
Is a KPN Netherlands SIM card good for tourists?
It can work for a stay of several weeks. KPN sells a 4.99 EUR prepaid SIM by post or in its stores, with no eSIM option on prepaid. For a short visit, a travel eSIM is usually faster to set up.
Does KPN have a prepaid eSIM?
No. KPN's eSIM page says eSIM is available on all its mobile subscriptions with a compatible device, and that it is not possible with prepaid. Prepaid customers get a physical SIM, ordered online or bought in a KPN store.
How much is a KPN prepaid SIM?
KPN lists the prepaid SIM at a one-off 4.99 EUR, with no data bundle included. Registering it in the KPN Prepaid app for the first time gives a 7.50 EUR bonus. Prepaid bundle prices are not on the page we read.
Does KPN prepaid work in the EU?
KPN says rates in the EU are the same as in the Netherlands, and bundles work in both countries at no extra cost. Outside the EU, international rates apply. You can top up online or in the app while abroad.
Do I need ID or a Dutch address for a KPN prepaid SIM?
KPN's shop and registration pages do not mention ID or a Dutch address. The SIM is posted, so a delivery address is needed, and we cannot confirm whether foreign addresses work. Ask KPN or buy in a store.
