Telcel Mexico SIM card: prepaid Amigo, eSIM and the registration rule

Telcel is Mexico's largest network by its own account. A visitor can get a prepaid Amigo line or eSIM, but must register it with a passport.

Is a Telcel Mexico SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

If you are leaving the resort corridors, probably yes, and if you are not, a travel eSIM may be easier. Telcel describes its own network as the largest in the country and says its 5G reaches more than 15,000 localities, which are claims, not measurements we have checked. The practical hurdle is registration. Since 9 January 2026, Telcel says, every new line must be registered, and for foreigners that means a valid passport.

What can a visitor buy from Telcel?

We read Telcel's homepage, eSIM page, registration page and 5G page on 8 October 2026.

  • Prepaid Amigo. Telcel's prepaid brand is Amigo, with packages and top-ups sold through its site and shops. We read no prices on the pages we opened, so we quote none.
  • eSIM. Telcel says its eSIM is for Plan de Renta and Amigo lines. You can buy a new Amigo eSIM at the eSIM Amigo portal, where it is emailed to you, or take a compatible phone to a customer service centre. The package activates once the eSIM is installed, and you have a year from purchase to install it. Activation is free, and you need an unlocked phone, the purchase email and stable Wi-Fi.
  • Visitor roaming. The homepage links a "Viajero Internacional" page, aimed at Telcel customers travelling abroad, not at buying a local line.

Do foreigners need to register a Telcel line?

Yes, according to Telcel's registration page. It says all users of any phone company must register a new line from 9 January 2026, including Amigo prepaid users. Accepted ID is a voter credential or a passport with a photo and CURP. For foreigners it says registration is possible only with a valid passport or a temporary CURP for foreigners. You can register in person at a customer service centre or online with a selfie, with three online attempts. The page does not mention tourists separately, and it does not say how a visitor without a CURP completes the online route, so ask in a shop.

What does Telcel say about coverage?

Its 5G page says more than 68 million prepaid users have access to a 5G network it calls the largest in the country, available in more than 15,000 localities, and it links to a coverage map we did not examine. It gives no measured speeds. Our own network notes rank Telcel first, but they are an unverified lead, so we rely only on Telcel's statements above.

Telcel compared with a travel eSIM

A travel eSIM avoids the registration step. Our Mexico SIM card comparison and cheapest eSIM page cover that. For the other two local options, read AT&T Mexico and Movistar Mexico, or return to the Mexico hub.

Bottom line

Our verdict on the Telcel Mexico SIM card is that Telcel prepaid and the Telcel eSIM are strong on claimed coverage, and the registration rule is the thing to plan for. Check Telcel coverage on its map.

Common questions

Can tourists buy a Telcel SIM card in Mexico?

Does Telcel have an eSIM for visitors?

Telcel offers an eSIM for Plan de Renta and Amigo lines. A new Amigo eSIM is bought at its eSIM Amigo portal and emailed to you, or set up at a service centre. It needs an unlocked compatible phone and Wi-Fi to install, with no activation cost. It must still be registered.

What ID do I need to register a Telcel line as a foreigner?

Telcel's registration page says foreigners can register only with a valid passport or, where applicable, a temporary CURP for foreigners. Mexicans use a voter credential or passport with CURP. Your name must match the ID. You can register in a service centre or online with a selfie.

Does Telcel have the best coverage in Mexico?

Telcel calls its network the largest in the country and says its 5G reaches more than 15,000 localities. Those are the carrier's own claims, and its pages we read give no measured speed. Check its coverage map for your route, especially outside the resort areas.

Is Telcel cheaper than a travel eSIM?

We cannot say, because we read no Telcel prices on its site and quote none. Telcel's current prices are on its site. A travel eSIM skips line registration, which makes it simpler for a short trip; a Telcel line may suit a longer stay.
