Vi India SIM card: eSIM rules we read, and what Vi leaves out
Vi, formerly Vodafone Idea, publishes a detailed eSIM page. It is for existing Vi customers, and it says nothing about visitors. Here is what that means.
Is a Vi India SIM card a sensible choice for a visitor?
We cannot recommend it from Vi's own pages. They are written for Indian customers, and the one detailed page we read, on eSIM, expressly says it does not cover KYC, documents or foreign nationals. The sensible position for a visitor is to treat a Vi India SIM card as something to ask about in a store, not something to plan around.
What does the Vi eSIM page say?
Vi's eSIM page says that to get an eSIM you need an eSIM-capable device and an active email address on your account, since the profile details and QR code are sent there. The steps, in short:
- Request it in the Vi app (Help, then Activate eSIM) with your phone's 32-digit EID, or by SMS from your Vi number to 199.
- Confirm within 15 minutes, then answer a verification call if you used SMS.
- Wait about 15 minutes, then add the eSIM on the phone, using Wi-Fi.
Two cautions from the page. Incoming and outgoing SMS, including one-time passwords, are blocked for 24 hours after activation, which matters if your bank texts codes. And the eSIM is not yet available in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, the North East and Assam. Do not delete the eSIM from the phone's settings, or you lose calls and data.
This is a swap for an existing Vi number, so it is not a tourist eSIM. The page names no price, document or visa rule.
What does Vi say about coverage?
Its site menu links to a network coverage page and a 5G deployment map. We did not read them, so we state no coverage figure.
Vi India SIM card or a travel eSIM?
For a visitor, a travel eSIM sidesteps the unknowns above and avoids the 24-hour SMS block. A local SIM only makes sense on a long stay once a store has confirmed it will register a foreigner. See our India SIM comparison. Other operators: Airtel, Reliance Jio and BSNL.

Common questions
Can tourists buy a Vi India SIM card?
Vi's pages we read do not say. The eSIM page states that it does not cover KYC, required documents or eligibility for foreign nationals, and sends you to live chat or a Vi store. A visitor should ask a Vi store directly, carrying a passport and visa.
Does Vi have an eSIM?
Yes, for existing Vi numbers on eSIM-capable phones. Vi's page describes requesting it in the Vi app or by SMS to 199, then downloading the profile and scanning a QR code sent by email. It is not yet available in several regions, including the North East and Assam.
Why can't I receive OTPs after activating a Vi eSIM?
Vi's page says incoming and outgoing SMS, including one-time passwords, are blocked for 24 hours after eSIM activation. Plan for that if your bank or a payment app texts codes. Keep your home SIM active, or finish any logins before you switch.
Is Vi coverage good in India?
We cannot say. Vi's menu links to a network coverage page and a 5G map, but we did not open them and found no figure we could verify. Check the map for your route, and expect coverage to vary by region.
Is Vi better than a travel eSIM in India?
For most visitors a travel eSIM is simpler, since it needs no KYC and works on arrival. Vi's own pages do not describe a visitor offer. The India comparison page puts local and travel options side by side, which is the better place to decide.
