Airtel India SIM card: what the carrier's own pages say about visitors

Airtel is the only Indian operator we checked with a dedicated FAQ entry for foreign nationals. We read its pages on 8 October 2026 and list what they still leave unsaid.

Is an Airtel India SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

It is a reasonable first choice to investigate, mainly because Airtel's site acknowledges foreign visitors, which the other operators' pages we read barely do. An Airtel India SIM card suits someone staying a few weeks or longer who is prepared to complete identity checks in India. It suits a three-day trip less well, because the process in the pages we read is built around KYC, not a counter handover, and Airtel does not describe a tourist pack.

What does Airtel say about foreign nationals?

Airtel has a short FAQ entry titled "Mobile Connection to Foreign National/Tourist". Its answer to the one question it asks, what is the validity of a foreign national's number, is that the number is valid until the visa validity date. That is all the page says. It gives no price, no document list for foreigners and no steps.

How do you get an Airtel prepaid SIM?

Airtel's prepaid page says you can order a new SIM through the Airtel app or its website, with free home delivery, and that no extra charge applies for a new SIM. It gives two activation timings that are not the same: a few hours after you insert the SIM, and within 24 hours of delivery. It lists the proofs Airtel accepts. Identity proof includes voter ID, driving licence, Aadhaar and passport, and address proof includes Aadhaar, passport and a utility bill. A port option is also offered.

What the page does not say is whether a foreign visitor can complete that order online, whether a visa copy or local address is needed, or which Airtel shops handle foreign passports. Ask at an Airtel store before you count on the website route.

What does Airtel say about coverage?

Its prepaid page promises "great network coverage" and 24 by 7 support but gives no figure. We did not read an Airtel 5G page with numbers, so we are not repeating any.

Airtel India SIM card or a travel eSIM?

A travel eSIM is bought before you fly and skips KYC entirely. An Airtel SIM can be cheaper on a long stay, but only once you have solved the paperwork. See the trade-off in our India SIM comparison. If you want an alternative local network, read the Reliance Jio, Vi and BSNL pages.

Common questions

Can tourists buy an Airtel India SIM card?

Airtel's FAQ for foreign nationals confirms a number can be used until the visa expiry date, and its prepaid page lists passport among accepted proofs. It does not say whether a visitor can order online or what extra checks apply. Visit an Airtel store with your passport and visa and ask.

How long is an Airtel SIM valid for a foreigner?

Airtel's FAQ says a foreign national's mobile number is valid until the visa validity date. It gives no other time limit and does not say what happens on extension. If your visa changes, ask Airtel before relying on the number to receive banking codes.

Which documents does Airtel ask for a new prepaid SIM?

Airtel's prepaid page lists identity proof such as voter ID, driving licence, Aadhaar or passport, and address proof such as Aadhaar, passport or a utility bill. It does not give a separate list for foreign visitors, so confirm the requirements for your visa type at a store.

How fast does an Airtel prepaid SIM activate?

Airtel's prepaid page gives two timings: activation within a few hours after you insert the SIM, and within 24 hours of the free home delivery. It does not reconcile them, so allow a day. Do not plan to rely on it the moment you leave the airport.

Is Airtel better than a travel eSIM in India?

For a short trip, a travel eSIM is easier because you install it before landing and need no KYC. Airtel may be cheaper over weeks and gives a local number. Compare prices, validity and your time on the India comparison page before deciding.
