BSNL India SIM card: its site would not open, so this page is short

BSNL is India's state-owned operator. Its website refused our connection on 8 October 2026, so we say what we do not know and what a visitor should ask.

Can we say a BSNL India SIM card is a good choice for a visitor?

No. On 8 October 2026 bsnl.co.in refused our connection, and we reached no BSNL page that describes a tourist product, a price list, an eSIM or a registration rule for foreigners. So everything that matters for a visitor is open: what BSNL charges, whether it will register a foreign passport, how far its 4G reaches, and whether it has 5G where you are going. We would rather leave those blank than copy an unverified claim.

What should you ask before buying a BSNL prepaid SIM?

Take these to a BSNL customer service centre or authorised retailer:

  • Will you issue a prepaid SIM against a foreign passport and visa, and what else do you need?
  • What is the first recharge, and what does it include?
  • How many days until the line is active, and when does it expire?
  • Is there 4G or 5G where I am staying, and in the towns on my route?
  • Is there an eSIM, and does it work on my phone?

Where do we look next?

India's other three major operators have pages we could read: Airtel, which has a dedicated FAQ entry for foreign nationals, Reliance Jio and Vi. Airtel's FAQ says a foreign national's number is valid until the visa validity date.

BSNL India SIM card or a travel eSIM?

With so much unknown, a travel eSIM is the low-risk option for your first days. You install it before you fly and need no KYC. Compare costs in our India SIM comparison.

This page is deliberately thin. We will extend it when BSNL's site can be read.

Common questions

Can tourists buy a BSNL India SIM card?

We could not confirm it. BSNL's website refused our connection on 8 October 2026, so we read no tourist offer or registration rule. Ask a BSNL customer service centre whether it issues prepaid SIMs against a foreign passport and visa, and what other documents it needs.

Does BSNL have an eSIM?

We could not verify it, because we could not open BSNL's site. If you need an eSIM, ask BSNL directly, or consider a travel eSIM bought before departure, which avoids the question of whether a state operator will register a foreign visitor.

Is BSNL cheaper than Airtel or Jio?

We cannot compare, because we could not read BSNL's prices. Airtel's and Jio's pages we read also give visitors few price details. Ask each operator for a written price and validity before you buy, and factor in the time spent on registration.

How good is BSNL's coverage?

We do not know. We read no coverage claim from BSNL and could not open its coverage pages. Coverage in India varies by region for every operator, so ask a local BSNL centre about the towns on your route before relying on it.

What is the safest way to get data in India as a visitor?

A travel eSIM installed before you fly gives you data on arrival without KYC, and nothing to collect. You can add a local SIM later if you stay. Our India comparison page shows the main options and what each is best for.
