Yettel Hungary SIM card: the Pass eSIM and in-store prepaid

Yettel sells a data-only Pass eSIM online and prepaid SIMs in stores. Its own pages list different prices, so check before you buy. Read 8 October 2026.

A Yettel Hungary SIM card for a visitor comes in two forms: a data-only Pass eSIM you can buy online, and a prepaid SIM sold in Yettel shops where a foreigner must show a passport. There is one thing to know before paying: Yettel's two English pages for visitors list different prices for the same Pass plans.

This is desk research from Yettel's public pages, read on 8 October 2026. We have not tested the service.

What can a visitor buy with a Yettel Hungary SIM card?

The eSIM page lists Yettel Pass S at 3,000 Ft (unlimited data in Hungary, 3 days), Pass M at 7,000 Ft (7 days) and Pass L at 9,000 Ft (30 GB across Hungary and the EU, 30 days). All are one-off and data only. The in-store page for short-term visitors lists Pass S at 5,000 Ft, Pass M at 9,000 Ft and a Stay plan at 12,000 Ft for 30 days with voice and data and 30 GB of EU roaming. It lists EU roaming data of 20 GB for Pass S and 36 GB for Pass M, where the eSIM page shows 24 GB and 43 GB in one place and 20 and 36 in another. We cannot say which is current, so check at checkout.

Pass S and Pass M cannot be used for calls. Balance top-ups are not possible on the eSIM, and once it runs out you buy another plan.

How does the Yettel eSIM work?

You buy the plan, scan the QR code and set up the line. It starts automatically when you first connect to a network in Roaming Zone 1, and you must do that within 30 days of signing the contract. Yettel states that eSIM is supported only on 5G-capable devices and lists models that are not compatible, including iPhone XR, XS, 11 and SE (2nd generation). Check your phone first.

What do foreigners need for a Yettel prepaid SIM?

The page says foreigners can buy only in person, with a passport, ID card or driving licence; non-EEA citizens need a passport. Yettel lists shops at Astoria, Westend and Corvin Mall in Budapest. Packages carry no starting balance, so top up to use add-on tickets. Minutes and SMS cost 30 Ft each.

What does Yettel say about coverage?

Only that it offers "great network coverage and fast internet speeds", with no 4G or 5G details. We cannot confirm claims about rural strength.

How does it compare with a travel eSIM in Hungary?

Yettel's Pass eSIM is the nearest Hungarian carrier product to a travel eSIM: data only, installed by QR code, no store visit. The Stay SIM is the voice-capable option, and it needs a shop. Our Hungary SIM card comparison sets the options side by side, and cheapest eSIM covers data-only plans. We do not name the local network behind travel eSIMs, because most providers do not publish it. If you land in Budapest, see also Budapest Airport.

The other Hungarian carriers in this series are Magyar Telekom and Vodafone Hungary. The Hungary hub links the rest.

Common questions

Is a Yettel Hungary SIM card good for tourists?

It can be. The Pass eSIM is data only, bought online and started with a QR code, while the Stay SIM adds voice but must be bought in person with a passport. Yettel's pages list different prices for the same Pass plans, so confirm the price.

How much is the Yettel Pass eSIM?

Yettel's eSIM page lists Pass S at 3,000 Ft for 3 days, Pass M at 7,000 Ft for 7 days and Pass L at 9,000 Ft for 30 days. Its in-store page lists Pass S at 5,000 Ft and Pass M at 9,000 Ft. The pages disagree, so check at purchase.

Can any phone use the Yettel Hungary eSIM?

No. Yettel says its eSIM is supported only on 5G-capable devices and lists incompatible models, including iPhone XR, XS, 11 and SE (2nd generation) and some Galaxy S20 LTE variants. Check the list on Yettel's page against your exact handset before you buy, because a 4G-only phone cannot use this eSIM.

What ID do I need to buy a Yettel prepaid SIM?

Foreigners can buy only in person. Bring a passport, ID card or driving licence; non-EEA citizens need a passport, because an ID card or driving licence is not enough. The page lists three Budapest shops and a store locator for other cities.

Does the Yettel Pass eSIM include calls?

No. Pass S and Pass M are data only and Yettel says they cannot be used for voice calls, so a call needs a different plan. The Stay plan at 12,000 Ft for 30 days is the voice-and-data option, with minutes and SMS at 30 Ft each after a top-up, and it is sold in stores.
