Vodafone Hungary SIM card: what the One prepaid starter offers

Vodafone Hungary's consumer service now appears on One's site. Foreigners cannot activate a prepaid starter online and must bring a passport to a One store.

A Vodafone Hungary SIM card is now sold under the One brand, and the practical point for visitors is the same as before: you can buy a starter almost anywhere, but a foreigner must activate it in person at a One store with a passport or other ID. Vodafone's own site, vodafone.hu, did not load for us on 8 October 2026, so everything below comes from One's English page.

This is desk research, not a test. One's visible text did not mention the Vodafone name, so we are relying on One's pages for the current product.

What can a visitor buy with a Vodafone Hungary SIM card?

One's English page for foreign visitors describes the One Instant starter kit, sold at fuel stations, hypermarkets, Inmedio, Relay, post offices and electronics shops. It does not give the price of the starter. It lists data add-ons for Hungary and the EU: 1.5 GB for 990 Ft, 5 GB for 2,290 Ft, 20 GB for 4,990 Ft, 500 GB for 7,990 Ft, and unlimited data and voice for 30 days at 14,990 Ft. International calls from Hungary start at 76 Ft per minute to EU countries.

For data, you enable mobile data and set the APN to INTERNET, with no username or password. Top-ups can be made online by card (credited within 48 hours), at ATMs and at POS terminals at fuel stations and post offices.

Can a tourist activate it online?

No. The page says that under Hungarian regulations a foreign customer cannot activate online and must visit a One store. Bring an ID card, passport or driving licence; for citizens outside the EU/EEA, only a passport is accepted. You also need a valid email address to receive the contract. Foreign customers also have to do the annual data validation in person at a store.

Is there a Vodafone Hungary eSIM?

One's English page does not mention eSIM, so we cannot confirm one for prepaid.

What does it say about coverage?

The page gives reference speeds in kbit/s for 2G, 4G and 5G, which are not useful coverage claims, and nothing on where the network reaches. We therefore cannot confirm that Vodafone is strongest in Budapest. Use One's coverage map.

How does it compare with a travel eSIM in Hungary?

Because a Vodafone Hungary SIM card needs a store visit for activation, it is slower to start than a travel eSIM you install before landing. In return you get a Hungarian number with voice. Our Hungary SIM card comparison sets the options side by side, and cheapest eSIM covers data-only plans. We do not name the local network behind travel eSIMs, because most providers do not publish it. If you land in Budapest, see also Budapest Airport.

The other Hungarian carriers in this series are Magyar Telekom and Yettel Hungary. The Hungary hub links the rest.

Common questions

Is a Vodafone Hungary SIM card good for tourists?

It works if you can visit a One store, because foreign customers cannot activate online. The starter is sold widely, but you need a passport (non-EU/EEA citizens) or ID, and an email address. A travel eSIM avoids the store visit.

Is Vodafone Hungary now called One?

One's pages present the prepaid and mobile service for consumers under the One brand, and the English visitor page we read did not use the Vodafone name. We could not load vodafone.hu to check, so confirm the brand and prices at a One store or on one.hu.

What ID do I need to activate a Hungarian prepaid SIM at One?

One says to bring an ID card, passport or driving licence, but citizens outside the EU/EEA can only use a passport. You also need a valid email address for the contract, and foreign customers do their annual data validation in person.

How much is mobile data on a One prepaid SIM?

One lists add-ons of 1.5 GB for 990 Ft, 5 GB for 2,290 Ft, 20 GB for 4,990 Ft and 500 GB for 7,990 Ft, usable in Hungary and the EU, plus unlimited data and voice for 30 days at 14,990 Ft. The starter's own price was not on the page.

Does One offer an eSIM for visitors?

The English visitor page does not mention eSIM, so we cannot confirm one for prepaid. If you want an eSIM and a Hungarian number, ask at a One store, or compare Yettel's eSIM or a travel eSIM on our Hungary comparison page.
