How does Airalo eSIM work? Buy, install, connect
An Airalo eSIM is a data plan you download to your phone instead of a card you swap. Here is the whole path from purchase to first connection, as Airalo describes it.
How does Airalo eSIM work in one paragraph?
How does Airalo eSIM work? You buy a plan for a country or region, install it on your phone as a digital SIM, and switch it on for mobile data when you are somewhere the plan covers. There is no card to post or swap. Airalo's help centre describes an eSIM as an embedded SIM built into the phone, with the plan downloaded to it. This page is desk research from Airalo's own help pages, which we read on 8 October 2026. We did not test a phone ourselves.
What is Airalo?
Airalo calls itself the world's first eSIM store and says it sells eSIMs for more than 200 countries and regions. That is Airalo's own description, and we have not checked it independently. The store sells local, regional and global eSIMs, plus unlimited-data packages. Our Airalo review holds the prices we have read off its site, which is a different job from this page.
Which phones can use an Airalo eSIM?
The phone has to support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked. Airalo also says the phone cannot be jailbroken (iPhone) or rooted (Android). A quick test it gives: open the phone dialler, enter *#06#, and look for a 32-digit number labelled EID. If one appears, the phone supports eSIM. The full list is on our Airalo compatible devices page.
How do you use an Airalo eSIM? The five steps
Airalo eSIM how to use questions mostly come down to five steps.
- Buy. Log in on airalo.com or in the app, open the eSIM store, pick a plan for your destination, and pay.
- Install. In the app, go to My eSIMs, choose the plan, tap View details, then Install or share. You can install directly, scan a QR code, or type in the details by hand. Our iPhone installation guide walks through all three.
- Switch it on. In the phone's cellular or mobile network settings, turn the new line on and select it for mobile data.
- Adjust if told to. Some plans need a manual APN or data roaming switched on. The app's How to connect section says which. See Airalo APN settings.
- Connect. Once you are inside the plan's coverage area, the eSIM should join a supported network on its own.
Airalo says you can buy an eSIM without the app, but you need the app to install, activate and use it. More on that on the Airalo app page.
When does the clock start?
So, how does Airalo eSIM work day to day? Each plan gives a fixed amount of data for a fixed number of days. The data is for the whole period, not split into daily portions. For most plans, Airalo says, the period starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in its coverage area, so installing at home usually costs you no days. In some cases it starts at installation instead. The package details in the app, under the activation or validity policy, say which applies to your plan. The validity period cannot be extended.
Where does an Airalo eSIM work?
Only in the area it was sold for. A plan sold for France covers France, not Spain, unless it is a regional plan that lists Spain. If you install it before you arrive, it will not connect until you are in the covered area.
What if the data runs out on an Airalo eSIM?
Some eSIMs can be topped up from My eSIMs, and some offer automatic renewals. Others cannot, and you buy a new plan. The Airalo eSIM top up page covers the difference. If a plan is not connecting, Airalo's own order of checks is on the Airalo eSIM not working page. To compare Airalo with other providers on cost, see our cheapest eSIM page.
What Airalo does not say
How does Airalo eSIM work behind the scenes? Its help pages do not explain how Airalo's eSIMs get onto local networks, and they give no single standard speed. Plan coverage, networks and 5G support are listed per eSIM, in the additional information shown before you buy.
Common questions

Can I install my Airalo eSIM before I travel?
