Airalo eSIM not working? Work down Airalo's own checklist
Most Airalo eSIM problems are not faults. Here is the order Airalo itself recommends, including what 'activating' and 'Unable to Activate eSIM' really mean.
Start with the fault Airalo's own help centre lists most often
An Airalo eSIM not working is usually down to one of about eleven things, and Airalo's help centre lists them in a sensible order. We read that article, and the iPhone-specific ones beside it, on 8 October 2026. Everything below comes from them. It is a checklist, not a diagnosis, so work down it and stop when the signal comes back.
Is the Airalo eSIM actually meant to be working yet?
This is the one people skip, and it explains more "Airalo not working" complaints than any setting does. An Airalo eSIM not working on the day you land is a different problem from one that is not working at home.
An Airalo eSIM only connects inside the country, or region, it was sold for. A plan for France does nothing in Spain. If you installed it at home before you flew, then a status of "activating" or even "activation failure" is not a fault. Airalo says an iPhone eSIM stuck on activating is usually waiting for you to land, that the eSIM is fully installed even when the screen shows a failure message, and that activation finishes by itself once the phone is in range of a covered network.
So if you are still on the ground at home, put the phone down.
The Airalo eSIM not working checklist, in Airalo's order
Once you are somewhere the plan covers, go through these one at a time.
- Check it is installed. The eSIM should appear in your phone's SIM or cellular settings and show as installed in the Airalo app. If you carry several SIMs, give each a clear label so you do not switch off the wrong one.
- Turn it on and select it for data. The line has to be on, and chosen for mobile data, and for calls and texts too if your plan includes them. The exact taps for your handset sit in the app under My eSIMs, then Details.
- Switch off airplane mode. It blocks every wireless connection, the eSIM included. Give the phone a few seconds to look for a network.
- Look at the APN. Some eSIMs need a specific access point name. Often it is set for you. When it is not, the app's instructions tell you what to copy and where to paste it.
- Turn on data roaming if the instructions ask for it. On an iPhone you can switch it on for the eSIM alone. On Android it applies to every SIM. Either way, keep roaming off for your home SIM, or you may be charged for it.
- Choose the network by hand. The installation instructions name the networks your eSIM can use. Left on automatic, a phone sometimes grabs a weaker one.
- Turn off your other SIMs for a moment. On a phone that runs two at once, the second line can get in the way.
- Drop from 5G to 4G/LTE, or to 3G. On an iPhone it is in the eSIM's own settings, and on Android it is under mobile network settings.
- Restart the phone. Dull advice, and it works more often than it should.
- Check the signal itself. If none of that helps, the local signal may simply be too weak where you are standing.
"Unable to Activate eSIM" on an iPhone
That exact message has its own list from Airalo. In short:
- the eSIM may already be installed, in which case check Settings, then Cellular, make sure the line is on, and enable data roaming if needed;
- the installation needs a stable internet connection, so get onto Wi-Fi and try again;
- a restart clears temporary glitches;
- old iOS versions can cause compatibility trouble, so back the phone up and install any update under Settings, General, Software Update before retrying;
- a carrier-locked phone can block eSIMs from other providers. Look under Settings, General, About for "No SIM restrictions", and if it is not there, your own mobile provider is the one to ask;
- a VPN, or an unfamiliar device profile under VPN & Device Management, can interfere with installation.
Airalo eSIM still not working after all that?
If your Airalo eSIM is still not working, contact Airalo. Its help pages say support is available 24 hours a day, and the app's connection instructions will tell you what to quote about your device and plan.
Before you do, it is worth knowing what this page cannot tell you. Airalo's troubleshooting article does not say how long an eSIM can sit on "activating" before you should worry, and it does not describe when a plan's validity clock starts. We would rather leave those gaps than guess.
If the eSIM works and you only want to know whether it was worth buying, the Airalo review holds every price we have read off its own site, and Airalo's promo code situation explains why no code is the right answer to a question people keep asking. Comparing it with the others is on our cheapest eSIM page.
Common questions
Why is my Airalo eSIM not working?
Most often because the phone is not yet where the plan works, or a setting is off. Airalo's checklist covers whether the eSIM is installed and selected for data, airplane mode, the APN, data roaming, manual network selection, other active SIMs, the 4G/5G mode, a restart and local signal strength. Work through them in that order.
Why does my Airalo eSIM say activating or activation failure?
Airalo says an iPhone eSIM stuck on activating is normally waiting for you to arrive. The eSIM is fully installed even when a failure message shows, and activation completes by itself once you are inside a covered network.
Why can't I activate my Airalo eSIM on my iPhone?
Airalo lists several causes for the 'Unable to Activate eSIM' error: the eSIM is already installed, no stable internet during installation, a temporary glitch, an old iOS version, a carrier-locked phone, or a VPN or device profile in the way. Restart, update iOS, check Carrier Lock under Settings, General, About, and turn off any VPN.
Do I need to turn on data roaming for an Airalo eSIM?
Only if the installation instructions say so. On an iPhone you can enable roaming for the eSIM alone, on Android the setting covers every SIM, and either way Airalo advises keeping roaming off on your primary SIM to avoid charges.
How do I contact Airalo support?
Through the Airalo app or its help centre. Airalo's troubleshooting pages say support is available 24 hours a day.
