Buying a SIM in Greece: no ID, short queues, three airports

The rule that makes Greece different

No ID is required to buy a prepaid SIM in Greece. No passport scan, no registration wait, no coming back later once the number activates. You hand over cash or a card and walk out with working data.

Most of the EU does not work this way, and it removes the single biggest reason travellers reach for an eSIM. In Greece the eSIM has to win on price and convenience alone, and at some trip lengths it does not.

At the airport

Athens International (Eleftherios Venizelos). Cosmote and Vodafone Greece. Peak queue around 10 minutes.

Heraklion (Nikos Kazantzakis), Crete. Cosmote and Vodafone. Peak queue around 10 minutes.

Santorini (Thira) National. Cosmote only. Peak queue around 15 minutes.

Santorini is the one to watch: a single carrier and the longest wait of the three, at a small airport that gets very busy in season. If Santorini is your entry point and you want a local SIM, expect to spend the fifteen minutes — or arrive with an eSIM already running.

Prices, and what you get

Our country data puts a typical Greek airport SIM at around $15, and tourist packs are sold in the 10GB to 30GB range. Cosmote, Vodafone Greece and Wind/Nova prepaid SIMs are also sold at carrier stores nationwide, so you are not restricted to the airport.

At $15 for 10GB or more, that is $1.50 per gigabyte at worst and $0.50 at best. Hold that figure — it is what everything below has to beat.

Which network to ask for

Cosmote. It is the largest of the three, the only operator with deployed 5G, and it has the best island coverage in the Cyclades. Vodafone Greece and Nova are strong on the mainland and the bigger islands but thinner on the small ones.

If you are staying in Athens or on Crete, the difference is academic. If you are island hopping, ask for Cosmote.

WiFi will cover you in the meantime

Greek tourist WiFi is genuinely good. Hotels, restaurants and cafes across the tourist destinations are reliable, and almost all island accommodation has it. If you land without data you can sit down, get online and decide what to buy rather than joining a queue on instinct.

The eSIM option, with prices

Read that against the $15 local pack. For two or three days, an eSIM at $2.90 to $4.00 is less than a quarter of the price of a local SIM you do not need. For a fortnight of real use the counter is no longer the value answer: Nomad's 20GB month at $1.05 a gigabyte and its 50GB month at $0.62 both beat the $1.50 worst case, and the 50GB beats the $0.50 best case too.

Greece is an EU member, so there are no eSIM restrictions and no unusual registration rules, and an EU SIM has full roaming rights while you are here.

So which?

Short trip, light use: buy an eSIM before you fly. Two weeks or more with heavy use: buy a Cosmote pack at the airport, because the usual friction is not there. Anything in between: Nomad's 20GB month at $21 is the value pick in our Greek data, and its 50GB month at $31 is the cheapest rate in the country.
