Bell Canada SIM card: no new prepaid, so what can a visitor buy?

Bell stopped taking new prepaid customers at the end of 2024. Here is what its own pages say, and where a visitor is better looking.

Is a Bell Canada SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

Usually not, and the reason is simple. Bell's support page says it no longer offers prepaid plans for new activations, with the cut-off at 31 December 2024. A short-stay visitor needs prepaid. So a Bell Canada SIM card is mostly something for people who want a monthly plan, not a two-week holiday.

We read Bell's own pages on 8 October 2026. Everything below is what they say, and where they say nothing we say so.

What happened to Bell prepaid?

Bell's support page says accounts activated before the cut-off keep their service and can keep topping up. It points prepaid shoppers to Lucky Mobile, its discount brand, which it describes as having no contracts, no credit checks and no data overage charges. We did not read Lucky Mobile's own site, so we cannot tell you its prices, whether it sells to visitors, or what ID it needs.

One more limit from the same page: Bell says its prepaid service does not work outside Canada. That is a footnote for a visitor, but it matters if you hope to keep using a Canadian number once you cross into the US.

What does Bell sell as a SIM or eSIM?

Bell's SIM page lists an eSIM you can activate online, a physical SIM for monthly plans, and a separate "prepaid eSIM" entry with a link to prepaid activation. The page shows placeholder prices of zero and says you have to pick a plan to see the real cost, so we have no Bell prices to quote. Bell's current plan prices are on its site.

Ordering details the page does give: you can order by chat or phone, collect in store (listed as free, possibly within two hours), or have it delivered. The page does not say whether a passport or Canadian credit card is needed, and it does not mention visitors. A Bell support answer found in search says travellers can activate an eSIM through the MyBell app with Wi-Fi or data and an eligible credit card. We could not tell from it whether that covers prepaid, so confirm before you rely on it.

What does Bell say about Bell Canada coverage?

Bell calls its network "5G-capable" with coast-to-coast coverage and links to a coverage map. That is marketing language and the page gives no percentages or independent test. Check the map for the places on your route, especially if you are heading outside the cities.

Bell Canada eSIM versus a travel eSIM

Because you cannot buy a new Bell prepaid line, the practical alternative for most visitors is a travel eSIM bought before you fly, which installs on an unlocked phone and needs no shop visit or Canadian payment card. Compare the options on our Canada comparison page, and see Telus, Rogers and Freedom Mobile for what the other carriers say about visitors.

For the wider picture see our Canada SIM and eSIM hub, the Canada SIM card comparison and our cheapest eSIM page. This page is desk research from the carriers' own public pages, not a test of any plan.

Common questions

Does Bell Canada still sell prepaid SIM cards?

Not to new customers. Bell's support page says it will no longer offer prepaid plans for new activations from 31 December 2024. Existing prepaid customers can keep their service. Bell directs new prepaid shoppers to its discount brand Lucky Mobile, whose terms we did not read.

Can a tourist buy a Bell Canada SIM card?

Bell's SIM and eSIM page does not mention tourists or ID requirements, and new prepaid is closed. A Bell support answer suggests travellers can activate an eSIM in the MyBell app with an eligible credit card, but it does not say whether that covers prepaid. Ask Bell before you rely on it.

Does Bell have a Bell Canada eSIM?

Yes. Bell's SIM page says you can activate an eSIM online in minutes on phones that support eSIM and the Bell network, and lists a separate prepaid eSIM entry. Compatible examples include iPhone XS or later and Google Pixel 3 or later. Real plan prices are not shown until you choose a plan.

What does Bell say about its coverage?

Bell describes a 5G-capable network with coast-to-coast coverage and links to a coverage map. It gives no population or area percentage on the pages we read. Treat it as marketing and check the map for your own route, particularly outside big cities.

Will Bell prepaid work outside Canada?

No. Bell's prepaid support page says prepaid service does not work outside Canada, and that roaming is not available on prepaid. If you plan to cross into the US, you need a plan that includes it or a separate SIM or eSIM.
