TIM Brazil SIM card: prepaid plans and what a visitor should know

TIM's prepaid headline offer is 16 GB for R$30 over 30 days. Its site is quiet on whether a visitor needs a CPF, so ask before you rely on it.

Is a TIM Brazil SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

A TIM Brazil SIM card is a reasonable cheap option for a visitor who stays a few weeks and does not mind sorting out registration in a shop. It is not built for tourists. TIM (Telecom Italia's Brazilian business) sells ordinary prepaid lines, and the page we read does not say what a foreigner needs to buy or register one. We could not open every page on the Brazilian carriers' sites from our tools, so this page keeps to what we could read.

What does TIM prepaid cost?

On TIM's prepaid page (read 8 October 2026) the main offer is TIM Pré XIP Plus. The headline is a R$30 recharge with plenty of internet for up to 30 days, and the chip-plus-recharge example is 16 GB for R$30 with benefits valid for 30 days. Benefits need a recharge of R$17 or more, or enough balance to renew them. The plan includes unlimited calls to any Brazilian operator, unlimited texts to TIM numbers and a social media package.

Smaller extras on the same page: a R$15 discount coupon for the Zé Delivery app, a R$9.99 fee to change your number, and a small R$1 or R$3 charge for the Pix and WhatsApp recharge benefit. Treat those figures as a snapshot. TIM changes promotions often, so the live page is the price of record.

How do you get a TIM eSIM or prepaid chip?

The only eSIM mention we found on that page says a defective chip can be replaced or switched to eSIM through the Meu TIM app. It gives no eligibility rules or steps, and it says nothing about selling a new prepaid eSIM to a visitor. The page also does not say whether a CPF, the Brazilian taxpayer number, or any ID is needed to register. Brazilian prepaid lines are normally registered with a CPF, so a tourist should expect to ask in a TIM store and bring a passport.

What does TIM say about coverage and 5G?

TIM's headline claims "the largest 5G coverage in Brazil". The small print is more careful. The "largest coverage" footnote is defined by 4G municipalities and population, using Teleco data from 2020, and the page describes its 5G DSS service as slower than standalone-frequency 5G and limited to some regions. It also lists 4G speeds of up to 5 Mbps down on this plan. So the claim is TIM's own and the evidence behind it on that page is old. Use TIM's coverage map for your actual route.

TIM SIM card or a travel eSIM?

A local TIM SIM gives you a Brazilian number and the recharge terms above, at the cost of a shop visit. A travel eSIM can be installed before you land and needs no Brazilian paperwork. We cannot say which network a travel eSIM uses, because no provider except eSIMCard publishes that. Our Brazil SIM card comparison and the cheapest eSIM page put the options together. For the other two operators, see Claro and Vivo, or go back to the Brazil hub.

Common questions

What does TIM say about its 5G coverage?

TIM headlines the largest 5G coverage in Brazil, but its footnote bases 'largest coverage' on 4G data from 2020 and calls its 5G DSS service slower and limited to some regions. Check TIM's coverage map for your route.
