Claro Brazil SIM card: what a visitor can actually buy
Claro will sell a visitor a prepaid eSIM, but its own help text says a foreigner has to do it in a physical store with a passport. Here is what we could confirm.
Is a Claro Brazil SIM card a good choice for a visitor?
A Claro Brazil SIM card is a workable option for a visitor who is happy to queue in a shop on arrival, and a poor one for anyone who wants to be online the moment they land. Claro (the Brazilian arm of América Móvil) sells prepaid lines, but its registration process is built around Brazilian paperwork. We could not open every page on the Brazilian carriers' sites from our tools, so this page keeps to what we could read. Claro's own site does not publish a visitor-specific tourist plan that we could find.
What can you buy: Claro prepaid and Claro eSIM?
Claro sells a prepaid chip and a Claro eSIM. For the eSIM, Claro's help content says you can buy through its website, app or a physical store, and that a QR code arrives after purchase. It also says the prepaid eSIM plan is taken out in its online store, and that moving an existing physical chip to eSIM is done in a store.
For foreigners the wording is narrower. A Claro help article says foreign customers can activate a prepaid eSIM with a passport as their identity document, and that this is available only in Claro's physical stores. We read that through a search extract, because the page itself would not load for us, so confirm it in a shop.
Two practical points from Claro's eSIM instructions: you need Wi-Fi to finish activation, and the QR code can be scanned once only, so a screenshot kept for later will not work. If you lose it, Claro points you to its Minha Claro Móvel app.
Do you need a CPF or an ID to register a Claro prepaid SIM?
For a physical prepaid chip, Claro's activation page says the line turns on automatically and sends you an SMS with the number and registration steps. Registration, by link or by dialling 552, asks for a CPF (the Brazilian taxpayer number), a date of birth, a postcode and the state where the CPF was issued. It also says Anatel, the telecoms regulator, requires a photo of an ID document and a selfie. The accepted documents it lists are the RG, the CNH or the RNE, all Brazilian or resident documents.
That page does not mention passports or foreign visitors at all. A tourist with no CPF should assume the online route may not work and ask in a Claro store.
What does Claro say about its coverage?
We could not read a Claro coverage or 5G statement on the pages we reached, and we will not repeat one from memory. Claro's site has a coverage checker. Use it for the route you are taking, especially outside the big cities.
Claro SIM card or a travel eSIM in Brazil?
The trade is simple. A local Claro SIM card gives you a Brazilian number and local prepaid terms, at the cost of a shop visit and paperwork. A travel eSIM can be bought and installed before you fly. No travel eSIM provider except eSIMCard publishes which network it runs on, so we cannot tell you whether any of them uses Claro. See our Brazil SIM card comparison and the cheapest eSIM page.
If you want a Brazilian carrier anyway, read the pages for Vivo and TIM before choosing, and start from the Brazil hub.
Common questions
Can a tourist buy a Claro Brazil SIM card?
Claro sells prepaid chips and eSIMs, and its help text says foreigners can activate a prepaid eSIM using a passport, in physical stores only. Its physical-chip registration page asks for a CPF and Brazilian ID documents and does not mention passports, so a visitor should go to a store.
Does Claro sell an eSIM in Brazil?
Yes. Claro says you can buy a Claro eSIM on its website, in its app or in a store, then scan a one-time QR code over Wi-Fi. Its content is not fully consistent on converting an existing chip to eSIM, so check whether the app or a store is required.
What do I need to register a Claro prepaid SIM?
For a physical chip, Claro's page asks for a CPF, date of birth, postcode, the state where the CPF was issued, and a photo of an ID (RG, CNH or RNE) plus a selfie. It does not state a passport route, so ask in a store.
Is Claro coverage good across Brazil?
We could not read a Claro coverage claim on the pages we reached, so we will not make one. Claro provides a coverage checker on its site. Check your specific route there, particularly for trips away from large cities.
Is a Claro SIM better than a travel eSIM for Brazil?
It depends on whether you want a Brazilian number and are willing to visit a store with your passport. A travel eSIM can be set up before departure. Our Brazil comparison page lays the options side by side.
