Vodafone Australia SIM card: where visitors can buy and what ID

Vodafone sells prepaid starter packs at airport stores and thousands of shops. Here is what its visitor page says about ID, eSIM and coverage.

Is a Vodafone Australia SIM card a good choice for visitors?

It is a practical one if you want to walk into a shop. A Vodafone Australia SIM card is sold at Vodafone's airport stores and at a very large number of ordinary shops, and Vodafone has a page written specifically for people visiting Australia. What we cannot tell you is its current prepaid pricing, because we could not read it. We read the visitor page on 8 October 2026 and this is desk research, not a test. See the Australia hub for the other carriers.

How does a visitor get a Vodafone SIM?

Vodafone says you can buy a Prepaid Starter Pack online or from a Vodafone store when you arrive. Its stores are at Sydney Airport (Mascot), Brisbane Airport and Perth Airport. Starter Packs are also sold at over 20,000 outlets, including supermarkets, service stations, newsagents and convenience stores.

What ID does a Vodafone tourist SIM need?

Vodafone says you need an international passport to activate a Prepaid Starter Pack. You can activate online or in store. The page asks nothing more specific than that, and we did not read the full activation steps.

Vodafone prepaid and eSIM

The visitor page does not mention eSIM, so we cannot say whether a visitor can get a Vodafone eSIM. Its prepaid plan pages did not load for us on the day, so we do not quote plan prices or data amounts. Check Vodafone's visitor page and its prepaid plans for current figures.

Useful details it does give:

  • You do not need to cancel before leaving. Prepaid services disconnect automatically if you do not recharge for over a year after your credit expires.
  • Recharging is easiest through My Vodafone.
  • Your phone must support the frequencies Vodafone uses. Network-locked phones bought from Vodafone can be unlocked with an online tool.
  • Long stays may qualify for a SIM Only plan, but that needs a passport, proof of an Australian address and a visa valid for the contract term.

Vodafone coverage

Vodafone points visitors to its coverage checker to see whether service is available at the places on your itinerary. The page we read gives no coverage percentages or 4G/5G claims, so we make none. If you are heading far from cities, check the checker, and compare with Telstra, whose own pages claim the widest coverage.

Vodafone versus a travel eSIM

A local Vodafone SIM gives you an Australian number and shop support, at the cost of showing a passport. A travel eSIM is bought before you fly and needs no registration. The Australia comparison and our cheapest eSIM page set the two side by side. Other local options are Optus and Boost Mobile.
