Optus Australia SIM card: what we could confirm for visitors
Optus's site would not load for us, so this page says only what we could verify and what you should check yourself.
What we could and could not verify about Optus
We tried to read Optus's prepaid and traveller SIM pages on 8 October 2026, and the Optus site did not load for us: every request timed out. So this Optus Australia SIM card page is short on purpose. We would rather say what we could not confirm than fill it from memory.
What we did see is that Optus has a page titled for a traveller SIM (optus.com.au/prepaid/traveller-sim), which suggests Optus sells a prepaid SIM or eSIM aimed at people visiting Australia. We did not read its contents, so we cannot tell you its prices, data, validity, ID rules or where it is sold.
Is an Optus Australia SIM card a good choice for visitors?
We cannot answer that from Optus's own pages, because we did not get to read them. What we can do is point you to the decision that matters. If your trip stays in cities and main corridors, the Optus network is one to consider alongside the others. If you are going remote, compare Optus's coverage map with Telstra, whose own pages claim the widest coverage. Those are carrier claims, not tests.
Optus prepaid and Optus eSIM
Optus has a prepaid range and the traveller page mentions eSIM in its name. Beyond that we have nothing verified. Before buying, check:
- price and validity of the traveller plan, since promotional prices change;
- whether the SIM must be activated in Australia;
- what ID, for example a passport, is needed to register;
- where you can collect a physical SIM, such as a shop or airport;
- Optus's own coverage map along your route.
Optus compared with other options
For other Australian carriers, see Vodafone Australia and Boost Mobile, both read in full. The Australia SIM card comparison puts local SIMs next to travel eSIMs, and the cheapest eSIM page shows the travel eSIM prices we have verified. A travel eSIM is bought before you fly and needs no Australian registration, which is useful if you cannot confirm a local SIM before you land.
The Australia hub links everything else we have for the country.
Common questions
Does Optus sell a SIM card for visitors to Australia?
Optus has a page called Travel SIM on its site, which suggests it does. We could not load the page on 8 October 2026, so we cannot confirm the plan, price or rules. Check optus.com.au before you travel.
How much is an Optus prepaid SIM for tourists?
We could not read Optus's current prices because its site timed out. Prices and promotions on prepaid plans change, so we do not quote any. Check the traveller SIM page on optus.com.au for today's plan and its offer end date.
Does Optus have an eSIM?
Optus's traveller page title refers to an eSIM, but we could not read the page, so we cannot confirm how it works or which phones it supports. Check that your phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable before you rely on it.
Do I need a passport for an Optus SIM?
We could not verify Optus's registration rules. Check Optus's own steps for what ID it accepts.
Is Optus better than Telstra for visitors?
We cannot judge that from Optus's pages, which did not load. Telstra's pages claim the widest network, which matters most outside cities. For city-only travel, compare the actual prices and coverage maps of both before choosing.
