Telstra Australia SIM card: is it the right one for visitors?

Telstra's prepaid plans, eSIM and ID rules for visitors, and what Telstra does and does not say about its coverage.

Is a Telstra Australia SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

Yes, if you are leaving the cities. A Telstra Australia SIM card is the one to buy when your trip includes country roads, small towns or coast away from the big centres, because Telstra's own claim is that its network covers more of Australia than any other. If you are only visiting Sydney, Melbourne and a couple of other cities, a cheaper network may do the job, and our Australia SIM card comparison lays the options side by side. The Australia hub has the wider picture.

We read Telstra's pages on 8 October 2026. This is desk research, not a test of the service.

What can a visitor buy from Telstra?

Telstra has a page for travellers selling Telstra prepaid plans and SIMs. That Telstra prepaid page lists plans of 7 days, 28 days, 6 months and 12 months. On the day we read it, a 7-day plan was listed at $15 (with a sale price shown) and a 28-day plan at $44, with the longer plans running to $395 for 12 months. Bonus data, sale prices and activation deadlines are all printed on the page, and some were due to end within weeks, so treat these figures as a snapshot and check Telstra's traveller page before you buy.

Two details matter to a visitor:

  • Telstra prepaid is for use in Australia only. Telstra says so plainly. You do not need to cancel when you leave, but you must switch off auto recharge yourself.
  • Download speeds are capped on most plans. The top 28-day plan listed was the one without a cap.

Telstra prepaid eSIM or physical SIM?

Telstra sells a Telstra prepaid eSIM as well as a physical SIM. The page says an eSIM installs in minutes and lets you keep your home number alongside an Australian one. It warns that some phones bought overseas may not support eSIM, and tells you to dial *#06# to look for an EID. Physical SIMs are posted, and Telstra says they usually take about five days in metro areas, which is no use if you land tomorrow.

The page does not say you can collect a Telstra tourist SIM at an airport, and it only mentions stores in passing. If you want to walk into a shop and leave with a SIM, this page does not promise that.

What ID does a Telstra tourist SIM need?

Telstra lists an international passport (or Immicard) among the accepted forms of ID, alongside Australian documents. So a visitor can register with a passport.

What does Telstra say about its coverage?

Telstra says its network covers more of Australia than any other mobile network, that 4GX reaches major and regional cities and over 1,600 towns and communities, and that its 5G reaches 85 percent of Australians. Everything else falls back to 4G. Those are Telstra's claims, not independent measurements, and the page gives no coverage figures for remote areas. Check its coverage map for the route you plan.

Telstra versus a travel eSIM in Australia

A Telstra prepaid plan gives you a local number and Telstra's network, but you register it with ID. A travel eSIM is bought before you fly and needs no registration. Which network a travel eSIM uses is usually not published; our cheapest eSIM page and the Australia comparison show what each costs.

Other networks have their own pages: Vodafone Australia, Optus and Boost Mobile, which runs on Telstra's network.

Common questions

Is a Telstra Australia SIM card worth it for tourists?

It is worth it if you will travel beyond the cities. Telstra says its network covers more of Australia than any other and lists 4GX in over 1,600 towns. For a city-only trip, a cheaper network may be enough. Compare the plans on Telstra's traveller page before buying.

Can I use a Telstra prepaid SIM outside Australia?

No. Telstra states that its Pre-Paid plans are for use in Australia only. When you leave, you can use up what remains or let it expire, but you need to cancel auto recharge manually if you set it up.

Does Telstra have a prepaid eSIM for visitors?

Yes. Telstra sells prepaid eSIM plans that install in minutes, but warns that some phones bought overseas may not be compatible. Dial *#06# to check for an EID, or use the My Telstra app. If your phone cannot take an eSIM, order a physical SIM.

What ID do I need for a Telstra tourist SIM?

Telstra's list of accepted ID includes an international passport or Immicard, as well as Australian documents. The page does not say whether you must show it online or in person, so follow the activation steps for the plan you choose.

Does Telstra say how fast its network is?

Not in a way that helps a visitor. Telstra says download speeds are capped on most prepaid plans, with the top 28-day plan uncapped, and it claims 5G reach of 85 percent of Australians. It gives no average speed figures on the pages we read.
