Airalo unlimited data: what the fair use limit is
Airalo unlimited data slows to about 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day by default. Here is the policy in plain terms, the prices, and how Holafly's unlimited differs.
What does Airalo unlimited data really mean?
Airalo unlimited data means you will not run out of data during the plan, but your speed drops once you pass a daily threshold. Airalo's fair use policy sets that default threshold at 3 GB of high-speed data per day, after which speed falls to about 1 Mbps until the daily reset. We read the policy, the help centre and Airalo's unlimited pages on 8 October 2026, and Holafly's pages the same day. This is desk research. We did not test either on a phone.
What is the Airalo fair use policy for unlimited plans?
In paraphrase, the policy says:
- Threshold
- 3 GB a day by default. If a package uses a different figure, the policy says it must be stated in the package details before you buy
- After the threshold
- about 1 Mbps for the rest of that day. Airalo says messaging, simple browsing, maps and lower-quality video calls still work, while streaming, gaming and big downloads are slow
- The reset
- each "day" is 24 hours counted from when you activated the eSIM, not midnight
- Hotspot
- allowed, with no limit on tethering or on devices
- Not allowed
- reselling, machine-to-machine use such as SIM farms, peer-to-peer file sharing, hosting servers and similar network-heavy use. Airalo may suspend or end a package, without a refund, if it believes the rules are broken
- Congestion
- separate from the daily threshold, the networks behind the packages may slow traffic at busy times, and Airalo does not promise a speed
The policy page carries no effective date. It says changes apply to packages bought after they are published. Airalo's marketing FAQ describes the same 3 GB a day as being at 20 Mbps, without giving a figure for afterwards, so the two Airalo pages are not worded identically. The help centre adds that the threshold is shown in an eSIM's Additional Information.
What does Airalo unlimited data cost?
Airalo sells unlimited plans in 83 of the 94 countries we cover, at 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days. From our checkout readings (13 to 18 August 2026, US dollars): a week is $21.50 in Thailand, $23.50 in Spain, $24 in Germany, $27 in the United Kingdom. A month is $49 in Thailand, $59 in Germany, $63 in Spain, $69 in the UK. Full detail is in Airalo pricing.
Airalo's unlimited plans have no gigabyte count, so they cannot be ranked by price per gigabyte. Our cheapest eSIM page leaves them out for that reason. A metered plan can be much cheaper if you will not need unlimited: in Spain, 50 GB for 30 days is $39 against $63 for 30 days of unlimited.
How does Holafly's unlimited compare?
Holafly sells only unlimited. Its terms describe the plan as having no fixed data volume, but say speed may be restricted under a fair use policy if use is excessive or harms others. We did not find a numeric daily threshold on the Holafly pages we read, so we cannot tell you where it starts. Airalo, by contrast, states a number.
Hotspot is where Holafly is less clear than Airalo unlimited data. The allowance depends on the product: Holafly's regional trip plans allow 1 GB of sharing a day, its monthly Unlimited Global plan is described as including unlimited hotspot, and a separate page for a business plan describes a pause after 10 GB. Check the plan page before relying on tethering.
On price, in our comparison of same-length unlimited plans, Airalo was cheaper in 223 of 248 pairs and Holafly in 18. Germany's 30 days is $59 on Airalo and $73.90 on Holafly (read 18 August 2026). The long version is Airalo vs Holafly.
What should you check before buying an Airalo unlimited plan?
Three things, all from Airalo's own pages. First, the threshold: 3 GB a day is the default and the policy says any other figure is shown in the package details. Second, the clock: the day starts at activation, so a plan activated at 3 pm resets at 3 pm. Third, the validity start: per the help centre, usually when the eSIM first connects to a supported network, but for some packages at installation. Airalo unlimited data does not stretch the validity either; it cannot be extended, though you can top up.
Which unlimited plan should you pick?
If you want a stated rule and unlimited hotspot, Airalo is clearer on the pages we read. If you want one simple product with no gigabyte choice, Holafly. Either way, ask what you will do on day one: a 3 GB cap is plenty for maps and messaging, and tight for several hours of video. Nomad also has unlimited rows in 45 of our countries, but we did not read its speed rules, so we say nothing about them. Common questions
Is Airalo unlimited data really unlimited?
You will not run out of data during the plan, but Airalo's fair use policy slows you to about 1 Mbps for the rest of the day once you pass a default threshold of 3 GB a day. The threshold can differ by package, and Airalo says any different figure is shown in the package details before you buy.
When does the Airalo unlimited data daily limit reset?
Every 24 hours counted from the moment you activated the eSIM, according to Airalo's fair use policy, not at midnight. A plan activated at 3 pm therefore resets at 3 pm each day. After you pass the daily threshold, speed stays at about 1 Mbps until that reset.
Can I use a hotspot on Airalo unlimited data?
Yes. Airalo's fair use policy says tethering is allowed, with no limit on the number of devices. It does restrict network-heavy uses such as peer-to-peer file sharing, hosting servers, reselling and machine-to-machine use, and says it may suspend or end a package without a refund if it believes the rules are broken.
Does Holafly have a fair use policy for unlimited data?
Yes, in its terms. Holafly describes its unlimited plan as having no fixed data volume, but says speed may be restricted if use is excessive or harms others. The pages we read gave no daily number, and its hotspot allowance varies by product, so check the plan page before you rely on tethering.
Is Airalo unlimited data cheaper than Holafly?
In our checks, mostly. Across 248 same-length unlimited pairs, Airalo was cheaper in 223, Holafly in 18, and 7 were level. In Germany, 30 days is $59 on Airalo and $73.90 on Holafly. These are August 2026 checkout readings in US dollars, so confirm today's price.
