Telia Norway SIM card: the Telia Kontant prepaid, and the BankID catch

Telia sells a prepaid starter pack for 99 kroner, but registering it needs BankID unless you go to a Telia shop. Here is what its own page says, read 8 October 2026.

Is a Telia Norway SIM card a good choice for a visitor?

It is the one Norwegian operator where we could read a prepaid product page that fits a visitor, so on information alone it comes first. A Telia Norway SIM card (Telia Kontant) suits a stay of a couple of weeks or more, because you pay in advance, there is no credit check and the physical SIM comes in a starter pack. The catch is registration, which is built around Norwegian BankID. A visitor without one has to go to a Telia shop.

What does Telia Kontant cost and include?

From Telia's kontantkort page, read 8 October 2026:

Prices change, so read the page before you buy.

How do you register a Telia SIM without BankID?

Telia says the SIM must be registered to the person who will use it, that registration needs BankID, and that if you have no BankID or Norwegian personal number you should buy the starter pack in a Telia shop and register there. The starter pack is also sold at Power and Elkjøp, and a cheaper 29 NOK pack (with 30 NOK balance) at Narvesen, 7-Eleven and some Coop and Norgesgruppen stores. We do not know, from this page, whether a passport alone is accepted in a shop. Take it and ask.

An eSIM on a prepaid card is possible but needs a registered owner, and BankID verification is tied to eSIM activation, so a visitor should expect to talk to customer service. The SIM must also be topped up by at least 50 NOK each year to stay active.

What does Telia say about its network?

Its kontantkort page mentions access to Telia's 5G network and Roam Like Home, but the pages we read give no coverage percentage. We are not repeating any.

Telia Norway SIM card or a travel eSIM?

A travel eSIM is bought before you fly and needs no shop or BankID. If you will rely on data for weeks in the fjords or the Arctic, a local SIM is worth comparing, using our Norway SIM comparison. Other operators: Telenor Norway and Ice.

Common questions

How much is a Telia Norway SIM card?

On 8 October 2026 Telia's kontantkort page listed a 99 NOK starter pack with free calls and messages and 250 MB of data for 14 days. Telia Kontant packs of 3, 7, 12, 20 or 50 GB last 31 days. Starter packs at Narvesen and 7-Eleven were listed at 29 NOK.

Can a tourist register a Telia Kontant SIM without BankID?

Telia says registration needs BankID, and that if you have no BankID or Norwegian personal number you should buy the starter pack and register in a Telia shop. Its page does not state which ID a shop accepts, so take your passport and ask before paying.

Where can I buy a Telia prepaid SIM in Norway?

Telia says the 99 NOK starter pack is sold in Telia shops, Power and Elkjøp, and a 29 NOK pack at Narvesen, 7-Eleven and selected Coop and Norgesgruppen stores. Online purchase needs BankID and posts the SIM, so it does not suit a short stay.

Does Telia Kontant have an eSIM?

Telia says an eSIM with a prepaid card is possible, but it needs a registered owner plus user details, because BankID verification is tied to eSIM activation. It tells you to contact customer service for help. A visitor should not expect an instant self-service eSIM.

Is a Telia SIM better than a travel eSIM in Norway?

A travel eSIM avoids shops and BankID and works on arrival. A Telia SIM can offer more data for a longer stay, up to 50 GB for 31 days. Compare real prices and validity on the Norway comparison page before you choose.
