Telenor Norway SIM card: what we could confirm about prepaid and eSIM

Telenor has a prepaid kontantkort and a free eSIM, but the pages we read tie eSIM activation to BankID. We read them on 8 October 2026.

Is a Telenor Norway SIM card the right choice for a visitor?

It might be, but Telenor's own pages do not make the visitor route clear. A Telenor Norway SIM card exists as a prepaid kontantkort. What we could not find was a page for how a visitor buys the prepaid SIM, what ID is needed, or what a starter pack costs. For a short stay a travel eSIM is easier. Telenor deserves attention if you will be in Norway for weeks and can visit a shop.

What do Telenor's pages say about prepaid?

Telenor's kontantkort help page, read 8 October 2026, covers using a prepaid card rather than buying one. You can top up in the Mitt Telenor app with Vipps, online, or with charge cards sold at most grocery stores, petrol stations and kiosks, and check your balance by SMS, app or phone. It says Norwegian prices apply on a prepaid card in the EU and EEA. It also points to a subscription called Forskudd as a plan without a credit check. It does not list prices or data amounts in the text we read.

What about the Telenor eSIM?

Telenor's SIM page says activating an eSIM requires verification with BankID, and that the owner or user of the subscription orders the SIM, by app, My Pages, chat, phone or a dealer. A new physical SIM normally takes 6 working days by post. The eSIM QR code, once ordered, must be used within 14 days. These pages are written for subscribers, and they say nothing about visitors without BankID. Ask a Telenor shop or customer service before you rely on an eSIM.

What does Telenor not say?

It states no coverage percentage on the pages we read, no passport rule and no tourist pack.

Telenor Norway SIM card or a travel eSIM?

A travel eSIM sidesteps BankID and postal delivery, so it wins for a week. A local line may pay off on a longer stay. See our Norway SIM comparison. Other operators: Telia Norway, whose prepaid page we could read in full, and Ice.

Common questions

Does Telenor Norway sell prepaid SIM cards to tourists?

Telenor has a prepaid kontantkort, but the pages we read cover topping up, not how a visitor buys one. They give no starter price or ID rule. Ask in a Telenor shop, with your passport, whether a visitor can register and activate a kontantkort.

Can I get a Telenor eSIM without BankID?

Telenor's SIM page says eSIM activation requires BankID verification and does not describe an alternative for visitors. Contact Telenor customer service or a dealer to ask what a visitor can do. A travel eSIM bought before you fly avoids the issue altogether.

How do I top up a Telenor prepaid card?

Telenor's help page lists the Mitt Telenor app with Vipps, topping up online, or charge cards and receipts sold in most grocery stores, petrol stations and kiosks. You can check your balance in the app, on My Pages, by SMS or with the Telmi chatbot.

Does Telenor charge roaming in the EU?

Telenor's kontantkort page says Norwegian prices apply for prepaid cards used in the EU and EEA. That matters if you cross into Sweden or Finland with the SIM. It advises checking which operators Telenor has agreements with before you travel.

Is Telenor better than a travel eSIM in Norway?

For a short trip a travel eSIM is easier: no shop visit, no BankID, no posted SIM. Telenor may suit a longer stay if a shop can register you. The Norway comparison page lays out the options side by side so you can weigh price and days.
